Black Ferns v USA: Sevens stars named as Black Ferns ring changes for final Pacific Four test
'This is going to be a special moment for them to play in front of their whānau and friends. Veisinia and Vici-Rose have been with us since our first training camp. They have worked hard and done the learning, while showing their commitment to the team by helping them prepare for the last two tests. It's now their time. 'Jorja and Risaleaana, who joined us last week following their successful Sevens World Series campaign, have slotted in seamlessly. They are great humans and diligent athletes. We look forward to watching them do their thing this weekend.' Last week's result has left the Pacific Four title on the line this weekend; a bonus-point win is likely to be enough for the Black Ferns to reclaim the title, as they go into the round with a points differential 14 better than that of Canada. Fellow Black Ferns Sevens players Theresa Setefano and Stacey Waaka will also get their first starts for the Black Ferns this season, named at second five-eighths and centre respectively. It's the same midfield combination that was so effective in the World Cup in 2022. Other changes in the squad see Kate Henwood start at loosehead prop and Kaipo Olsen-Baker at No 8, which sees Liana Mikaele-Tu'u move to blindside flanker. In the backline, Katelyn Vahaakolo starts on the left wing in place of Ayesha Leti-I'iga. On the bench, prop Awhina Tangen-Wainohu and lock Chelsea Bremner are also new inclusions to the match-day squad. Bremner initially missed selection for the Pacific Four squad, but gets an opportunity after a training injury saw Dhys Faleafaga ruled out for the rest of the season. Black Ferns: 1. Kate Henwood 2. Try machine Levi back to set Aussie record in Hong Kong
Maddison Levi has become the most prolific try scorer ever in Australian rugby when she blasted past her idol Charlotte Caslick's sevens tally at the Hong Kong Sevens. At just 22 years of age, the phenomenal Gold Coast athlete set the new landmark on Friday as she racked up another seven tries in just two matches at the biggest tournament on the Sevens World Series circuit. While scoring a hat-trick in the opening 54-12 win over Spain and then going over for four more in the 26-15 victory against Canada, try machine Levi took her tally to 189 over just four spectacular years to eclipse her heroine and teammate Caslick's mark of 186. Maddi Levi knows how to make a comeback 🇦🇺🔥@Aussie7s #HSBCSVNSHKG | #HSBCSVNS — HSBC SVNS (@SVNSSeries) March 28, 2025 "Charlotte has been my idol and she's been my mentor throughout all the years," said Levi, saluting her 30-year-old teammate Caslick, who's currently pursuing her ambitions in the 15-a-side game, hoping to play with Wallaroos at the World Cup later this year. "For her to be able to help me get to the level I'm able to play at is pretty awesome, but records don't really matter to me." In a youthful side, Levi, who's been out of action since fracturing her thumb in the Perth Sevens in January, simply carried on where she left off as the World Series top scorer at Hong Kong's new Kai Tak Stadium venue took her tally to 37 for the season. Caslick's absence also gave a chance to Queenslander Amahli Hala to make a terrific debut, scoring against Spain while Ruby Nicholas, Isabella Nasser, Faith Nathan and Piper Simons also added to Levi's hat-trick. Australia then sealed their quarter-final spot with Levi's tour de force against the Canadians. Meanwhile, Australia's men had a mixed day, going down to New Zealand 21-12 in their opener before producing a far better performance to end the first day with a 26-7 victory over South Africa's 'Blitzboks'. Against the New Zealanders, Liam Barry's team were 21-0 down before they rallied with tries from Aden Ekanayake and Jayden Blake. But co-captain Henry Paterson proved the star in their next, must-win contest, crossing for two tries to help put them into an unassailable 26-point lead, while Matt Gonzalez and Josh Turner also scored. "We were pretty disappointed with that first effort today against New Zealand but we weren't far off," said Paterson, whose side will need to beat Uruguay in their final pool match to seal a last-eight spot. "To come out and fix them against South Africa and set up the rest of the weekend is really encouraging."

New Zealand's Brake claims Sevens try-scoring record in Vancouver
Feb 22 (Reuters) - New Zealand's Michaela Brake scored her 257th Sevens World Series try in a 58-7 win over Ireland in Vancouver on Friday to break former teammate Portia Woodman-Wickliffe's all-time record for the elite circuit. Brake claimed the record with the third of five tries she scored in her 225th match and paid tribute to Woodman-Wickliffe while suggesting she might not keep it for long, given the rate at which Australian flyer Maddi Levi was scoring. Advertisement · Scroll to continue Report this ad "You've got to give full credit to Portia, she's been the top try-scorer for her whole career and she set those standards, she put women's Sevens on the map," the 29-year-old said of her fellow Black Fern, who retired at the end of last season. "It's an honour to be up there amongst her, so I'm going to hold on to it for as long as I can – until Maddi Levi surpasses me." Levi, who is missing the Vancouver tournament because of a hand injury, scored a record 69 tries last season and now has 182 from 124 matches.
