Sewickley Academy graduate Jason Li advances to final qualifying for upcoming U.S. Open at Oakmont
Jason Li, a Sewickley Academy graduate, has advanced into final qualifying and will soon have a chance to try and earn a spot in the upcoming U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club. Li, who won WPIAL and PIAA golf championships while at Sewickley Academy in high school, went on to play college golf at Carnegie Mellon and now has his eyes on qualifying for the U.S. Open that's being held in his hometown. Last week, Li fired a 67, shooting three under par in a qualifier match at the Country Club of York, earning co-medalist honors and advancing into final qualifying. Final qualifying will take place across the country as well as in Japan and in England on May 19 and on June 2. Should Li be able to qualify, he'll be teeing it up with the best in the world at Oakmont Country Club in mid-June when the U.S. Open returns to Oakmont for a record 10th time. Large crowds expected for 2025 U.S. Open When the USGA's biggest event rolls into Oakmont this summer, the man who's heading up this year's contest says the golfers will have a lot of eyes on them. "We're looking around 200,000 for the week," said Tim Lloyd, the USGA's senior director for the U.S. Open. The USGA is in the process of transforming the feared and revered course into a combination fair ground and golf proving ground, and they're on a tight schedule. The U.S. Open tournament will run from June 12 to June 15.

Sewickley Academy students stepping up to help victims of Hurricane Helene with fundraiser
SEWICKLEY ― Three local teenagers are hosting a fundraiser to help the victims still struggling in the wake of Hurricane Helene. The Hay Way fundraiser kicks off at the Sewickley Heights History Center at 5:30 p.m. May 8, offering "light bites" and entertainment by Genevive Carlson for a $20.25 donation. Funds raised will be used to purchase truckloads of Pennsylvania hay to send to farmers in North Carolina who continue to struggle with recovery from the hurricane in September 2024. Three Sewickley Academy seniors, Skylar Nocito, Chiara Zeitler and Maria Sirianni, are hosting the fundraiser. The girls say they were all raised around farmland and horses, which made them empathize with the North Carolina farmers. 'Life is challenging for farming families in the best of times,' Sirianni said. 'It's only right that people who benefit from their work help out when a disaster threatens them.' 'Once the storm passed, national attention shifted to the next big story,' Nocito said. 'But just because the rain stopped falling doesn't mean the disaster has ended. Farm animals still need to be fed. Families have to get the farms back up and running.' Another driving force for the fundraiser is the renewed need for support in North Carolina as federal support ends. Request for continued support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was recently denied, with the newly appointed leadership at the federal agency saying that the continued support for farmers and residents was decided to be 'not warranted.' 'This is a moment where Americans can show the real meaning of volunteerism,' Zeitler said. 'We're hoping folks from the region come out to share in the effort.' Community members can RSVP for the event by emailing thehayway25@ or calling 412-588-3147.
