Count 12: Attempted Aggravated Human Trafficking (Hiring a Child for Sexual Activity). Count 15: Distribute or Possess with Intent to Distribute an Opiate, Opium, Narcotic, or Stimulant Drug. Topeka man arrested for Jessica's Law sexual offense On March 9, 2024, the Topeka Police Department (TPD) responded to reports of a missing minor. The victim was safely recovered, but further investigation revealed that Johnson, later found guilty by a Shawnee County judge, had been actively targeting multiple minors. This investigation led to the discovery of two additional children who were victimized by him, according to Kagay. In court, evidence of Johnson's pattern of predatory behavior was presented, Kagay said. These behaviors included abducting minors under false pretenses, transporting them to isolated locations and coercing them into sexual situations using drugs, alcohol and money. Victims testimonies as well as forensic interviews confirmed that the man engaged in repeated acts of sexual assault, human trafficking and child endangerment. Kagay said Johnson's crimes were 'particularly egregious.' Court testimony detailed how Johnson lured children into his vehicle with the idea of running errands of giving them rides a short distance away. He then would drive victim's away from familiar locations, taking them to Douglas County. KDOT will soon replace part of K-99 in Marshall County According to Kagay, one of the victims recounted how Johnson offered her money to engage in sex acts, forced her to consume drugs and sexually touch her multiple times. Hours later, law enforcement officers intercepted Johnson's vehicle and rescued the victim, which led to his immediate arrest. 'Human trafficking and child exploitation are among the most reprehensible crimes in our society,' Kagay said. 'This conviction sends a strong message that we will relentlessly pursue justice for victims and hold traffickers accountable. Our office remains steadfast in our commitment to protecting the most vulnerable and ensuring that those who prey on children face the full weight of the law.' According to Kagay, Johnson is in custody waiting for a hearing to be scheduled for his sentencing. For more crime news, click here.
