Cynthia Nixon Asked Rosie O'Donnell To Take That Divisive 'And Just Like That...' Role

There are many things that run through both Sex And The City and its current incarnation And Just Like That... the fashion, the modern dating dilemmas - and the fact that every single episode has us talking, whether that is for good or for bad. FIND OUT MORE ON ELLE COLLECTIVE When it came to the opening episode of And Just Like That... season three, we were primed to be talking about Carrie and Aidan, but the biggest subject of discussion across both sides of the Atlantic seems to be Miranda's fling with a virgin nun - called Mary, no less - played by Rosie O'Donnell. In an interview with Variety about the internet-breaking plotline, O'Donnell explained how she came to join the show, via her friendship with Cynthia Nixon, who plays Miranda.'It was Cynthia,' she said. 'I'm good friends with Cynthia Nixon, and my daughter was actually her assistant on set for the last season of 'Sex and' — of 'And Just Like That.' I call it 'Sex and the City 2,' but that's not it. She put her on there, and then she said, 'By the way, Michael [Patrick King, creator] told me that he has a role for you. Are you up for it?' I said, 'Are you kidding me? In a minute!' I didn't even have to think about it.' Asked how she felt when she found out what that role was, O'Donnell said: 'I laughed my ass off. I thought — I know how to play this character.' 'I was very, very happy to be doing all my scenes with Cynthia. It was not acting for me. I don't have to act in love with her, because I've been in love with her for many years. I saw her in Wit, on Broadway, and even though I had known her for very many years and was friends with her in a real way, when I went backstage, I was awestruck and couldn't find my words.' And while much has been made of the more comical sides of the character - and that Wicked moment - O'Donnell said she found elements of Mary relatable. When asked 'have you known people like Mary who are isolated from their sexuality, even as they get older?' she replied: 'I know many women who only come to in in their 40s, and how hard it is when they set up a life with a man and children, and then they come to realise this basic thing about themselves,' she said. 'I understand their struggle. It was a relatable character — somebody who, for all different reasons, wasn't able to be in touch with who they were, and then came to find the beauty that awaits the rest of her life.' And Just Like That is on Sky and in the UK and NOW TV. ELLE Collective is a new community of fashion, beauty and culture lovers. Jodie Turner-Smith stuns at the Met Gala in red leather dress and a statement top hat

Jodie Turner-Smith brought Victorian high fashion to the Met Gala by wearing a stunning top hat and long, red leather dress. The actress, 38, stunned in the custom Burberry fit, which was reflected the theme of this year's event, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. Jodie's hair was pulled back into a sweeping pony tail to ensure that her statement making hat had the desired effect. She matched her lipstick with the dark red of the dress, opting for a sultry smokey eye look that made the gold of her hooped earrings truly pop. The coat itself was worn above a synched corset that accentuated Jodie's waist and a pair of figure-hugging trousers, both of which appeared to be made from a more silky material. Jodie posted alongside other big names including fashion designer Daniel Lee, 38, who also opted for a silky, dandy look, and fellow actress Cynthia Erivo, 38, who wore an equally statement-making black and floral jacket. Deemed the Oscars of the East Coast, the Met Gala sees some of the biggest stars descend on the iconic The Metropolitan Museum of Art for the annual charity event. Teyana Taylor, La La Anthony and Ego Nwodim hosted the Vogue livestream, with Emma Chamberlain tasked with doing interviews on the blue carpet. This year's is also the first Met Gala in more than 20 years to have a menswear theme. The gala raises the bulk of the curation budget for the museum's Costume Institute. This year, it's about tailoring and suiting as interpreted through the history and meaning of Black dandyism across the Atlantic diaspora. The theme is inspired by the annual spring exhibition, which this year is based in large part on Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, a book written by Monica L. Miller. She is guest curator of the exhibit. 'Historical manifestations of dandyism range from absolute precision in dress and tailoring to flamboyance and fabulousness in dress and style,' Miller writes in the exhibit catalog. 'Whether a dandy is subtle or spectacular, we recognise and respect the deliberateness of the dress, the self-conscious display, the reach for tailored perfection, and the sometimes subversive self-expression.' Just days before the fundraiser, Sarah Jessica Parker, left fans stunned as she, sadly, confirmed she would not be attending due to a scheduling conflict. 'I have to work,' the Sex and The City star told Entertainment Tonight. 'But there's going to be so much to see, and I look forward to seeing what everybody does and how they interpret the theme and the homework they did for the assignment. A very joyful assignment.' Brooklyn Beckham and his wife Nicola Peltz are also among the newly released names of celebrities opting to skip the highly exclusive, annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. On Monday, a source revealed to The Sun that Brooklyn had planned on father David Beckham's 50th birthday bash instead of the Met Gala. The couple, however, were noticeably no-shows at David's London celebration on Saturday, with the reason behind their fallout revealed here by Mail+.
