DJ Sean M: Meet Ireland's youngest ever festival DJ

DJ Sean M (Seán Meenaghan) is only 11 years old, but he's already spinning the decks at major Irish music festivals. In May, he made his festival debut at Greenfields, and this summer he'll be playing bangers at Beyond the Pale (Saturday and Sunday) and at the Kaleidoscope Festival (Friday evening set). A 5th class student at Colmcille's Senior School in Knocklyon, Seán's journey began before he could even spell turntable - climbing up to reach his dad's decks when he was still a toddler! Florence from RTÉ's news2day went to Seán's school and partied hard! Press play up top to see the report. Seán says: "When I was very young about 3 years old my father would bring in a step so that I was able to reach his decks. Since then I have practiced nearly every day I can remember. I got my very own set of Pioneer decks last Christmas and I'm very proud of them. "My family have gone to Ibiza every summer since I was born. I just love the dance scene over there, my favourite part is going to Cafe Mambo where I have seen Fatboy Slim, Claptone and many more. "It was just the most amazing experience at my school, I got to share my talent with all my school friends - most of them have never seen me play my decks before. It was great to see them all have so much fun and enjoy the music in the sunshine." Now armed with his own Pioneer setup and backed by the powerhouse platform NOISE Music, DJ Sean M has a growing list of gigs under his belt and a serious passion for the decks. DJ Sean M's Top 5 Dance Tunes Solarstone - Seven Cities The Prophet- CJ Bolland Wide Open Space - Mansun (Perfecto Mix) Silence - Delerium Heaven Sent - Bedrock His sound is rooted in House, Progressive House, and Trance, inspired by annual trips to the electronic music mecca of Ibiza. With energy, talent, and a deep love for dance music, DJ Sean M is proving that age is just a number when it comes to lighting up the dancefloor. 2024 Young Scientist winner honoured at US event

Seán O'Sullivan, the 2024 winner of the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, has won fourth place in the Technology Enhances the Arts category at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Ohio. Seán, who attends Coláiste Chiaráin, Croom, Co Limerick, also won a HP special award and was awarded $3,000. He was representing the EU Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) after coming second in that competition last year. Seán's project is called 'VerifyMe' which explores the development of a new artificial intelligence (AI) detection system that uses past examples of an author's writing to detect if AI was used to generate a piece of work. ISEF is the world's largest international STEM research competition for school students. This year, it is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Also competing were Eoin O'Grainne & Matthias Schazmann with their project 'Compost Immersion'. They are TY students at St Mary's Diocesan Secondary School, Drogheda. Mari Cahalane, Head of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, travelled with the Irish delegation. "I'm absolutely delighted for Seán, who has taken time away from his Leaving Cert studies to attend ISEF this week," Ms Cahalane said. "It's a testament to the calibre of our competitors that they excel at what is known as the Olympics of STEM on a global stage." "He, along with Eoin and Matthias, has represented BTYSTE and Ireland exceptionally well," she added.

Obituary: Seán Sherwin, former Fianna Fáil TD and chief party organiser who was also a successful businessman

Seán's father was a bricklayer and his mother took up a part-time job to assist her son's education. After attending De La Salle secondary school he studied social science at University College Dublin, believing it might help in developing a political career. However, his father became a building contractor and Seán switched over to Bolton Street College of Technology where he studied quantity surveying. He was still a student at Bolton Street when he stood as a Fianna Fáil candidate for Dublin South-West in the 1969 general election. Making a speech in the local district of Drimnagh on June 3, 1969, he said the fact that he was perhaps the youngest candidate in the entire contest was proof Fianna Fáil meant business when it declared the young men and women of tomorrow should have their voices heard. He wasn't elected on that occasion but polled a quite impressive 1,623 first preferences, getting eliminated on the fifth count. Fianna Fáil and Labour each won two of the four Dáil seats in the constituency. However, Labour's Seán Dunne died just seven days after the general election at the age of 50 and Sherwin was selected by Fianna Fáil as its candidate in the subsequent by-election. Labour chose trade union official Matt Merrigan over a number of alternative candidates including Seán Dunne's widow Cora who stood instead as Independent Labour. The by-election was held on March 4, 1970, and Sherwin won on the fourth count by 262 votes — a significant achievement in a constituency with a strong Labour presence. A week later, he arrived at Leinster House to take his seat, where he was greeted by government chief whip at the time, Des O'Malley. Interestingly, Charlie Haughey came into the Dáil chamber to observe the new TD making his first speech. Eighteen months later, in September 1971, Sherwin announced his resignation from Fianna Fáil and joined Aontacht Éireann, a new party headed by his friend and former minister Kevin Boland who favoured a strong interventionist approach by the government to the Troubles. ADVERTISEMENT Sherwin was also unhappy with taoiseach Jack Lynch's approach to the North and to social welfare issues. In the February 1973 general election, all 13 of the Aontacht Éireann candidates, including Boland, were unsuccessful. Sherwin was the only one to retain his £100 deposit but his seat was won by Declan Costello of Fine Gael whose party formed a coalition government with Labour. Sherwin went on to become very successful in the business sphere, with substantial interests in the Middle East and North Africa, especially Libya. He also became executive director of the Mater Hospital Foundation in July 1984. After Haughey became leader of Fianna Fáil in December 1979, Sherwin rejoined the party and ran unsuccessfully as a candidate in Dublin West in the November 1982 general election. In October 1985 he was appointed as Fianna Fáil's national organiser, in succession to Joe O'Neill who had died the previous year. In December 2001, he was awarded £250 in damages at the High Court in a libel action against the Sunday Independent but the case involved very substantial costs. Seán Sherwin passed away peacefully at home in Rooskey, Co Roscommon, on April 30. He was predeceased by his wife, Betty Sherwin, his sister Margaret, his brother-in-law Bernie and recently-deceased cousin Pat. He is sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his children John, Liz and Marc, and their spouses Caríosa, Tom and Dorcas, his grandchildren Seán, Tom and David, his brother Kevin and sister-in-law Catherine as well as nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and neighbours. Following repose at his residence in Rooskey he was taken to Stafford's Funeral Home in the Dublin district of Ballyfermot. His funeral mass took place at the local Our Lady of the Assumption Church on Monday May 5, followed by burial at Saggart Cemetery. A video of the funeral mass is currently available on the church's website.

Young folk musician with strong Kerry links set to release debut single

Seán Collins (22), a Donabate musician who has many family members from Kerry, said his folksy debut captures the process of falling in love and taking a leap of faith amid the worries and doubts that can occur in one's mind. Seán 's nan Phil O'Shea and uncle Crohan O'Shea both hailed from Lohar, Waterville. His dad Denis Collins also grew up in the area, which he visits often. The musician's grandfather was Podge Collins from Knocknagoshal. Seán was raised on the ballads of Liam Clancy and his music takes inspiration from contemporary singer/songwriters like Ed Sheeran and Noah Kahan. He told The Kerryman that this year felt like the right time to release his own music, which those who resonate with the work of current Irish artists like Hozier, Kingfishr and Amble will enjoy. "I'm really excited. I've basically spent the last four years in music college in Dublin developing my craft and learning about the industry,' Seán said. The musician has also spent a lot of time playing live music at different venues, including The Lobster Bar in Waterville, in recent years. Following the release of his debut single, Seán will undertake a tour that will include his first ever headline concert in Kerry. The gig will take place at St Michael's Church in Waterville on the evening of Friday, May 9 and feature Seán Lynch in support. "I've read amazing things about concerts that have taken place at the church,' Seán said. Tickets for the event cost €12 and are available at Seán will also play shows across the country as well as in London and Stockholm. Those interested in finding out more about the artist and his upcoming tour can visit his social media profiles on YouTube, Facebook or Instagram (@seancollins_music).
