SGT. ROCK Story and Character Details Revealed; Cillian Murphy and Mikey Madison Offered Roles — GeekTyrant
The war-torn world of Sgt. Rock was almost brought to life as a feature film, that is until DC Studios pulled the plug on the production. While the project is currently shelved, new intel from Nexus Point News offers new details on what could've been a gritty, character-driven WWII action epic from filmmaker Luca Guadagnino ( Call Me By Your Name , Bones and All ). Let's start with the casting carousel: Colin Farrell had reportedly entered talks to play the grizzled war hero Sgt. Frank Rock after both Daniel Craig and Jeremy Allen White passed on the role. Farrell's involvement was always tenuous, especially with The Batman Part II ramping up. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy was also offered the lead, but he turned it down. On the female lead side, the role of Mademoiselle Marie, who is Rock's love interest and a fierce freedom fighter, was offered to both Mikey Madison ( Scream , Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ) and Waves breakout Taylor Russell. As for the story, 'The film would have followed Sgt. Frank Rock, Mademoiselle Marie, and the Easy Company as they fight the Nazis in a battle to recover the Spear of Destiny in World War 2.' So, that sounds like it would've been a lot of fun! Easy Company itself was stacked with the following characters: Bulldozer : The hotheaded muscle of the group, late 20s. Wildman : Rock's loyal right-hand medic with a big red beard. Jackie Johnson : Former heavyweight boxer, mid-20s. Sure Shot : A sharp-eyed Apache sniper. Bean Pole : A lanky 19-year-old grenadier and translator. Dash : An 18-year-old track star turned ammo bearer (reportedly named Philip Mason, a nod to Ice Cream Soldier). Four Eyes : A nerdy 19-year-old comic book artist—yes, really. Junior : Just 17, enlisted after lying about his age. Johnny Doe: An original creation—a soldier who notches kills on his rifle like trophies. Challengers star Mike Faist was reportedly set to play Johnny Doe, reuniting with Guadagnino. David Jonsson ( Rye Lane , Alien: Covenant ) had been eyed for Jackie Johnson, but that didn't pan out. The film would've been shot mostly outdoors on location in the UK over six weeks, but weather conditions reportedly played a role in halting progress. There's been talk of trying again in 2026, but with Guadagnino already juggling projects like American Psycho , Separate Rooms , and Lord of the Flies , that window might be closing. Some insiders have speculated that 'Guadagnino remained untested in the realm of action movies, and even though the budget was in the $70 million range, a paltry sum for comic book movies, higher-ups may have wavered in their confidence.' So will Sgt. Rock ever see the battlefield? Hard to say. It's a cool, offbeat corner of the DC Universe, one that blends war drama, supernatural elements, and classic comic grit. We'll just have to wait and see if the movie eventually gets made one day.

James Gunn's DCU Hit With First Major Setback, And It Involves Colin Farrell And Sgt. Rock
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Colin Farrell already has more than enough DC Comics media cred from his Golden Globe-winning performance as Oz Cobb in The Penguin, but in the last few month, we've learned he's been making moves to join the new DC Universe franchise. Back in March, it was reported that Farrell was on deck to replace Daniel Craig in Sgt. Rock. However, word's now come in that this upcoming DC movie is no longer moving forward, which arguably marks the first major setback for the James Gunn-spearheaded DCU. This update comes to us from The Wrap, which reports that Sgt. Rock is no longer set to film this summer in England. No specific reasoning was officially provided for why the shoot has been scrapped, though one insider who spoke with THR said the publication stated that it 'came down to the project's scheduling needs of shooting outdoors.' Another insider claimed that there was concern from the DC brass about director Luca Guadagnino's ability to tackle an action-heavy movie like this. Although the DC Universe certainly hasn't faced challenges since James Gunn and Peter Safran, who run DC Studios together, announced the franchise in early 2023, this is the first time one of its projects has been outright cancelled. That being said, there is a little glimmer of hope. The article mentions that Sgt. Rock would be 're-assessed' at the end of this year and potentially get back off the ground for a summer 2026 shoot. Otherwise, this version of Sgt. Rock has been set aside. Even if the 2026 shoot happens, there's no guarantee that Colin Farrell and/or Luca Guadagnino would still be able to work on it. If Sgt. Rock ends up being revived, I wouldn't be surprised if a new director and lead actor are tapped to replace them. Who knows, maybe this could be how Jeremy Allen White actually gets involved. THR's report mentioned that Sgt. Rock was early on into the casting process before the shutdown occurred. Just like in the comics. Colin Farrell's version of the title character was going to lead the combat unit Easy Company to bring the hurt to Nazis during World War II. Mike Faist, who worked with Luca Guadagnino on Challengers, was reportedly being lined up for a role. The publication's sources also said there would be a female French Resistance fighter as a major character. The good news is that even with Sgt. Rock being put on ice, there's still a way to see him and Easy Company in action in the DC Universe. The soldiers appeared in the third episode of Creature Commandos Season 1, which can be streamed with a Max subscription. As far as the wider DC Universe goes, Superman kicks off the cinematic side of the franchise on July 11, and then Peacemaker Season 2 hits the 2025 TV schedule in August.

I Love American Psycho Vet Chloë Sevigny's Pitch To Return For The Remake, And Am Amused By How She Referred To The Director's Now-Dead DCU Movie
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Directors who remake already great movies always get some suspicious side-eye from yours truly, but Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho and core protagonist Patrick Bateman are perhaps more uniquely suited for bizarro vampings. With the adaptation-worthy stage musical, the lore-expanding Sumerian Comics series and the literary meta-verse of Ellis' Lunar Park and other works as proof of concept, I'm not so nervous about Luca Guadagnino's upcoming take on American Psycho. Even less so if OG co-star Chloë Sevigny is involved. The Oscar-nominated actress is currently promoting her star-studded upcoming 2025 movie After the Hunt, which happens to be her third and latest collab with Guadagnino. Given their closeness, she's not only aware of his ties to American Psycho, but also his DC movie that was recently put on hold, and she shared some A+ thoughts on both while talking to IndieWire. I realize I didn't yet say that I think Chloë Sevigny is as brilliant and talented as they come, and her penchant for taking on offbeat projects from the very start of her career continues to win me over. Amusingly enough, Patrick Bateman's secretary Jean is one of her less out-there roles, and I might even go so far as to call her adorably square. Which makes her ideal as one of the film's key survivors. That survival is itself key to how she'd appealed to Luca Guadagnino to return for his American Psycho project, despite the fact that it would be a fourth-wall breaking return. As she put it: I pitched to him that I should play Jean again, and that they do that reverse-aging on me. I thought that would be something that he would be into, conceptually having the same actress play the same part. But I don't know. He said he was going to think of something else for me. Perhaps the director just couldn't see a proper way to factor "reverse-aging CGI" into the budget. Though I'd dare say Sevigny wouldn't need such drastic measures to play Jean again if that were the only sticking point. But even if she won't be back in secretary form, I can't wait to see how she ends up playing into whatever version of American Psycho makes its way to theaters. In expressing her interest to work with Guadagnino again on the psychological horror novel's adaptation, Sevigny noted at the time the interview took place that she wasn't sure if he would be working on that or the DCU film Sgt. Rock, which the filmmaker was set to film with Colin Farrell before it was recently put back into the development cycle, making it the first canceled-esque project for James Gunn's DCU. The timing wasn't great, but the way she referred to the comic book project was splendid: I thought he was doing a World War II picture. To be sure, Chloë Sevigny is presumably telling no lies in making the connection between World War II and the character Sgt. Rock's origins as a WWII soldier, and the various war-centric comic arcs that he factored into for decades. And I'll cop to Luca Guadagnino being the kind of director who can step into any genre and create a "film" as opposed to anything resembling schlock. But Sgt. Rock went on to engage in lots of clandestine conspiracy-tinged stories well beyond on-the-boots warfare. And the team-up he probably associated with the most (beyond the military) was horror squad Creature Commandos. Speaking of, horror fans should absolutely check out Bruce Campbell and Edward Risso's six-issue miniseries Sgt. Rock Vs. the Army of the Dead. With all that in mind, I can't help but chuckle at thinking of anything in James Gunn's DCU being dubbed "a World War II picture," as if it were meant to share conversational space with The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Thin Red Line, or Schindler's List. Not wrong, but not quiiite right. Should American Psycho Actually Be Remade? With Remake In The Works, OG Film Creatives Speak Out Sevigny and Luca Guadagnino previously worked together with romantic cannibals on Bones and All and the coming-of-age HBO miniseries We Are Who We Are. And After the Hunt could very well be their biggest team-up to date, with Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri also heading up the cast. Sevigny says the college-set thriller will be 'polarizing,' so expect some fun convos. At this point, that's the only actualized film that audiences can look forward to seeing in the near future, while development continues on the others. Meanwhile, she can also be seen in a pair of indie films — Amalia Ulman's El Planeta and Durga Chew-Bose's Bonjour Tristesse — which are currently in theaters.

Wait, is DC's Sgt. Rock Starring Colin Farrell Cancelled or What?
Luca Guadagnino is probably best known for his horny movies with beautiful actors, so it was kind of a surprise when it was said that he would be directing Sgt. Rock for DC. After news of actors like Colin Farrell joining the film, it looks like the movie has caught another snag. Reports have come out that the movie had been cancelled, but THR says that Sgt. Rock 'was not going away, and would be reassessed at the end of the year for a possible summer shoot in 2026'. Originally the film was set to start shooting this year, but scheduling had become a conflict because the movie needed to shoot some sequences outdoors. As far as we know, DC heads James Gunn and Peter Safran love the script, and the movie has a modest budget that won't break the bank like any MCU project. Besides Farrell, Mike Faist ( Challengers ) was said to have been cast in the movie. As far as story goes, it's said to focus on Sgt. Rock and the men of Easy Company as they try to get to the Holy Spear before the Nazis do. I'll admit, I was already skeptical about the project based on the obscurity of the character, but I guess you can bet on James Gunn to want to give the spotlight to weirder heroes, seeing that he is the guy who put the Guardians of the Galaxy on the map. I'm hoping that Sgt. Rock gets off the ground soon. No release date has been set, but the movie is now aiming to start shooting sometime next year.

Luca Guadagnino's DC movie Sgt. Rock ‘cancelled'
Luca Guadagnino's DC film 'Sgt. Rock' has reportedly been shelved. The 53-year-old director had been working on the comic book movie with his 'Challengers' and 'Queer' collaborator Justin Kuritzkes, though TheWrap has now claimed the project is no longer going ahead at DC Studios. The outlet reports 'Sgt. Rock's cancellation was due to its scheduling, with the film seemingly needing to have started production this summer in the UK due to its reliance on exterior shoots - though the movie is said to have not been able to make the deadline. TheWrap added 'Sgt. Rock's budget - which was reportedly set at under $70 million - was likely not an issue and did not factor into its supposed cancellation. While both TheWrap and The Hollywood Reporter claim 'Sgt. Rock' has been shelved, Deadline has said the movie's pre-production has simply halted, with principal photography now aiming to start next summer. In the original comics, the titular Sgt. Rock is a World War II soldier and battlefield hero. The character has been the subject of multiple failed movie adaptations, with Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger previously linked to the role. Daniel Craig was initially attached to reunite with his 'Queer' director and portray the titular character in 'Sgt. Rock', though was said to have exited the project in February. Then, Colin Farrell reportedly entered talks to take the lead role, even though the actor is already a part of the DC cinematic universe, with him playing The Penguin in Matt Reeves' 'The Batman' and the eponymous HBO spin-off show. While 'Sgt. Rock' is possibly no longer happening, Guadagnino is still working on a new 'American Psycho' movie - with the filmmaker recently teasing 'the script is coming out very handsomely' for the flick. Appearing in a video segment at CinemaCon earlier this month, Guadagnino said: 'We are really working hard to bring to the screen a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' 'American Psycho', a book that I deeply love that is something that influenced me so much. '[Writer Scott Z. Burns] is doing an incredible job. The script is coming out very handsomely.' Although Guadagnino didn't reveal any of the cast for his 'American Psycho' movie, the director teased he was currently in 'conversation with very exciting performers to play the leads'. Last December, it was reported Austin Butler would play Patrick Bateman in 'American Psycho' - a role previously held by Christian Bale in the 2000 film adaptation. The new film won't be a direct remake of the 2000 movie, with Guadagnino's version poised to be a new take on the story that will have a more significant erotic emphasis than the original picture. Lionsgate film chief Adam Fogelson previously described the director as the 'perfect visionary' to helm the new cinematic iteration of 'American Psycho'. He said in a statement: 'We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate. Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP.'
