Illinois State Police urge for safe driving ahead of Memorial Day Weekend
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — As Memorial Day weekend approaches, law enforcement officials across Illinois are stepping up efforts to keep travelers safe on the roads.
The Illinois State Police (ISP) announced that troopers will be out in full force throughout the holiday weekend, watching for impaired and distracted drivers, as well as seat belt violations.
Drivers are being reminded to follow the rules of the road, especially what authorities refer to as the 'Fatal Four' violations: driving under the influence, distracted driving, speeding, and failure to wear a seat belt. These four behaviors are among the leading causes of serious and deadly crashes across the state.
Illinois State Police Trooper Shafer McKune emphasized the importance of making safe choices before hitting the road this weekend.
'Whether you're driving a car or a boat, really anything that you're operating, your life is in your hands,' McKune said. 'Other people's lives, your friends, your family, it's the same message. Don't drink and drive. Have a sober driver.'
The ISP urges all motorists to plan ahead, stay alert, and prioritize safety to ensure a tragedy-free holiday weekend.
