Are fireworks allowed in Columbus, central Ohio for Memorial Day? What to know

While you may be gearing up to celebrate Memorial Day, think twice before setting off any fireworks in certain areas in central Ohio. Since 2022, Ohio law has allowed residents to detonate consumer-grade fireworks only on certain holidays at specific times. However, the law also allows local municipalities to ban fireworks launches. In other words, just because they're legal statewide doesn't mean it's legal where you live. Fireworks are allowed on the following holidays unless your specific community bans them. Memorial Day weekend from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Juneteenth from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. July 3, 4, and 5, and the weekends immediately before and after from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Labor Day weekend from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Diwali from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. New Year's Eve from 4 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. New Year's Day from 12 a.m. to 1 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Chinese New Year from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Cinco de Mayo from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Obetz residents can launch them on the same days as the state law provides, but on New Year's Day they can only be fired until 12:30 a.m. Residents of Powell can launch fireworks on the days the state law listed, but they can't buy them in the city. Reynoldsburg only allows fireworks on the 4th of July from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Upper Arlington fireworks can only be launched with a written permit from the fire chief. Fireworks are banned in these municipalities unless you're looking to be fined and hit with a criminal charge. Licensed fireworks exhibitors can still put on shows if they get approval from local authorities. Four people injured, one critically, in drive-by mass shooting on Columbus' East Side

One person is in critical condition and three other people were injured in what Columbus police say appeared to be a drive-by shooting Thursday evening on the city's East Side. A ShotSpotter alert notified police to several rounds of automatic gunfire in the 480 block of Kimball Place. Moments later, a 911 caller reported that there were several people who were shot. One of the victims was transported in critical, life-threatening condition to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, Downtown, according to a Columbus police 911 dispatcher. Two other victims were transported to local hospitals in stable condition, including one who was grazed in the shoulder. Witnesses who were at the scene told Columbus police that multiple vehicles were seen in the moments leading up to and after the shooting. One of the victims described a silver or white minivan, and other witnesses described a gray Dodge Challenger. The description of the vehicles has varied among witnesses. Columbus police have closed off streets in the area and are continuing to interview witnesses. Shell casings outside have been marked and police are reporting on radio the recovery of bullets from inside some homes. Police are also going door-to-door to see if anyone has Ring camera footage that might help identify the suspects, who drove off from the scene. This is a breaking news story. Ohio Department of Health reports first human case of bird flu in the state

Ohio's first human case of bird flu has been reported by the state's Department of Health. The Ohio Department of Health announced Wednesday that a man from Mercer County who works on a farm came into contact with deceased poultry that was infected with the virus. The overall risk to Ohioans remains low, ODH said, but those in close contact with sick or dead poultry or wild birds should take precautions. There have been 68 human cases of bird flu in 11 states since Jan. 1, 2024, including one death in Louisiana. This is a breaking news story. This story will be updated.
