Cong minority functionaries plan mass resignations

Mangaluru: Upset over back-to-back murders in Mangaluru and the deteriorating law and order situation, Shahul Hameed KK, president of the minority wing of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress, said that several party office bearers from the Muslim minority community are expected to tender mass resignations on Thursday. He said that a meeting will be convened at 2.30 pm at Shaadi Mahal in Mangaluru, where 300–400 Congress members, ranging from booth-level functionaries to state-level leaders, are likely to resign from their posts. "This is a voluntary decision. Communal, religion-based murders are happening repeatedly in the district. The home department failed to control the situation. How many more innocents must die? Provocative speeches are being made openly, and the police are unable to contain the fallout," he said. Hameed further warned that the fear among the public is intense, and the district virtually shuts down by 7 pm. "Students will stop coming to Mangaluru if this continues. A handful of rowdies are creating havoc, and despite meetings by the home minister and district minister, murders continue unabated," he added. Ashraf resigns In a related development, former mayor K Ashraf submitted his resignation from the post of vice-president of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee. In his statement, Ashraf said, "I held various positions in the Mangaluru City Corporation and also served as mayor. With the Congress currently in power, I am deeply hurt by the persistent atrocities against minorities in Dakshina Kannada and elsewhere in Karnataka. " He pointed to the Sangh Parivar's role in inciting communal violence, hate speeches by fringe elements, and the brutal murder of Abdul Rahiman.
