Shaker Heights library reopens after fatal shooting
***Watch previous coverage in the video above*** SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) – The Shaker Heights Public Library has reopened after a teenager was shot and killed inside the main branch of the library on Tuesday. Investigators said the shooting was a result of a conflict between current and former students at Shaker Heights High School that led to a confrontation after school at the library. I-TEAM: Police monitor will not be removed after casino incident A 15-year-old boy is accused of pulling out a gun and shooting 18-year-old Charles Lee Shanklin. The victim was rushed by paramedics to the emergency room at University Hospitals, but he was later pronounced dead. The 15-year-old suspect ran from the library, but was arrested a short time later. He is now facing charges that include murder and carrying a concealed weapon. The library took to their Facebook page on Saturday to thank the community for all of its support after this tragedy. Cuyahoga County court records obtained by the I-Team following a public records request show the teen had a hearing date in court Wednesday and denied all the charges. It is not known when he will be back in court, but he is being held in the juvenile detention center. The teen also has a prior case and is facing several unrelated charges, including aggravated robbery and possession of a weapon in a school safety zone. 18-year-old dies after shooting at Ohio library
An 18-year-old man is dead after being shot inside an Ohio public library. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The shooting happened at the Main Branch of the Shaker Heights Public Library around 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, according to WOIO in Cleveland. They started CPR until EMS arrived at the scene. Shanklin was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries. WOIO reported that one person of interest was taken into custody at the scene. Their identity has not been released at this time. Shaker Heights City Schools confirmed that Shanklin was a student at Shaker Heights High School last year and that the person of interest is a current student in the district. 'As you are aware, a shooting took place earlier today at the Shaker Heights Main Library involving past and present Shaker Heights students. In light of this incident, there will be no classes at Shaker Heights High School and the Innovative Center for Personalized Learning on Wednesday, April 2. Students in CTE programs are not expected to report to their off campus sites. All other school buildings will remain open,' the district said in a statement obtained by WOIO. Shaker Heights library, high school closed after shooting
SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) -The main library in Shaker Heights will be closed Wednesday. Classes are also canceled for students at Shaker Heights High School and the Innovative Center for Personalized Learning, located less than a mile from the library. The closures were announced after a shooting took place at the library Tuesday afternoon and involved past and present Shaker Heights students, according to an emergency notice from the district. As FOX 8 previously reported, a male was taken by ambulance to the hospital in serious condition and a person of interest was taken into custody. The police chief said there were a number of people inside the library, including district students, at the time of the shooting. People said they hid in the bathroom and behind book stacks; anywhere they could duck for cover. Speed cameras banned in Ohio counties, townships The police department is just a block away. Officers arrived to the scene quickly and set up a perimeter. It was a couple of hours before everyone who was in the library was allowed to leave. On Wednesday, counselors will be available at the high school from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Families can also call 216-295-4200 for support. In an update to families, the superintendent reminded the community of the Safe School Helpline, which he said is a confidential way to report concerns about unsafe or potentially disruptive activities or situations. SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) – Shaker Heights High School classes will be canceled on Wednesday after a shooting at the nearby public library sent one person to the hospital. The Shaker Heights City School District posted the notice on its website Tuesday evening, stating there will be no classes on Wednesday, April 2, at Shaker Heights High School and the Innovative Center for Personalized Learning. The district said students in CTE programs won't be expected to report to their off-campus locations. Plane crashes in Tuscarawas County The rest of the district will be open normally on Wednesday. The district made the decision after a shooting inside the main branch of the Shaker Heights Public Library on Van Aken Boulevard around 4:42 p.m. on Tuesday. Officers confirmed they took a person of interest into custody and they aren't looking for more suspects at this time.
