Kidnapping suspect arrested after I-25 chase facing new charge

(PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo.) — The suspect arrested on Monday, May 26, after a high-speed chase on I-25 and for an alleged kidnapping, is facing new charges from an unrelated incident that happened in Lakewood, Colorado, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office (PCSO). PCSO said on Monday, deputies were called to a robbery at the Circle K in northern Colorado City, just off I-25. While deputies responded, they learned the suspect left the scene in a 2020 grey Ford Escape, and around that same time, learned of a kidnapping report where the victim's vehicle matched the description of the Ford Escape and information pointed to the victim being in the area. A deputy later located the car and attempted to pull it over, but the driver sped away from the deputy, starting a chase that ended in Huerfano County north of Walsenburg. Deputies arrested the driver, identified as 28-year-old Shane McSwane; the kidnapping victim was shaken and emotionally distraught but uninjured. Deputies learned McSwane had allegedly carjacked the woman on Sunday night, May 25, in Aurora, and said he then drove the woman against her will for nearly four hours, going as far south as the town of Aguilar. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Kidnapping victim rescued after 30-mile chase on I-25 On Friday, May 30, PCSO said McSwane is being held in the Pueblo County Jail and facing a new charge of Attempted First-Degree Murder from an unrelated incident in Lakewood. Lakewood Police had issued a $250,000 warrant for McSwane for Attempted First-Degree Murder and Assault with a Deadly Weapon related to the incident that happened within their jurisdiction. Stranger kidnaps woman, drives her nearly 200 miles from home, Colorado cops say

A man led authorities on a 30-mile chase spanning two counties after Colorado deputies say he carjacked, then kidnapped a woman. Shane McSwane, 28, was arrested on a slew of charges in relation to the kidnapping of a 22-year-old Aurora woman, the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office said in a May 27 Facebook post. 'I want to commend our deputies as well as the Huerfano County Sheriff's Office for their swift, professional, and courageous actions during this highly dangerous situation,' Pueblo County Sheriff David J. Lucero said in a news release. 'Their decisive response saved this victim's life.' Deputies said they were responding to a report of a robbery at a Circle K convenience store in Colorado City when a woman called 911 to report her daughter had been kidnapped. The woman told dispatchers her daughter's 'phone was pinging near the Circle K,' deputies said. The robbery suspect left in a Ford Escape prior to deputies arriving, according to the sheriff's office. The SUV matched the one involved in the woman's kidnapping, deputies said. As a deputy patrolled Interstate 25, they noticed the SUV driving northbound, exiting at Pueblo Boulevard, the sheriff's office said. The deputy tried to pull over the SUV, but the driver, later identified as McSwane, didn't stop, according to the sheriff's office. Instead, he drove southbound on Interstate 25, and a 'dangerous' 30-mile chase through two counties ensued, deputies said. McSwane 'refused to stop, crossing the interstate median multiple times, endangering other drivers on the interstate,' the sheriff's office said. Huerfano County deputies deflated the SUV's tires by placing 'stop sticks,' the sheriff's office said. Still, McSwane continued to drive 'several more miles,' according to the sheriff's office. Pueblo County deputies used a technical maneuver on the SUV, which caused it to stop, the sheriff's office said. Deputies from both counties boxed in the SUV, and 'McSwane was taken into custody at gunpoint,' the sheriff's office said. Despite being 'visibly shaken and emotionally distraught,' the woman was not physically harmed, according to deputies. The woman told deputies she was carjacked at about 11 p.m. on Sunday, May 25, while she was stopped in Aurora because of a car accident, deputies said. McSwane approached her SUV, then forced his way inside, she told deputies. 'He threatened her and took control of the vehicle,' deputies said. McSwane drove around with her inside the SUV 'against her will for nearly four hours,' traveling as far as Aguilar, about a 200-mile drive south from Aurora, deputies said. During the hours-long drive, he 'made repeated sexual comments' toward the woman, 'touched her inappropriately, and forced her to touch him,' according to deputies. When McSwane stopped at the Colorado City Circle K, the woman said he went inside and 'threatened to shoot the clerk if she didn't give him a lighter,' deputies said. The clerk was unharmed, deputies said. In addition to a second-degree kidnapping charge, McSwane is also facing 'two counts of aggravated robbery, unlawful sexual contact, second-degree motor vehicle theft, two counts of menacing with a deadly weapon, felony vehicular eluding, reckless driving and driving under restraint,' according to deputies. McSwane was in possession of the woman's debit card and 'drug paraphernalia' at the time of his arrest, so additional charges may be forthcoming, deputies said. McSwane was being held without bail as of May 28, jail records show. An investigation is ongoing, deputies said.

Colorado man arrested, accused of kidnapping, sexual assault, more after nearly 30-mile chase

A Fort Collins man was arrested after allegedly leading deputies on a chase that spanned several Colorado communities. The chase stemmed from an alleged carjacking, kidnapping, and sexual assault of a woman. Shane McSwane, 28, of Fort Collins, is accused of carjacking a woman in Aurora late Sunday night and taking that car 140 miles south to Colorado City to rob a Circle K. The woman's mother called the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office and told dispatchers her daughter was kidnapped and that her cell phone's location could be tracked. A deputy on Interstate 25 saw the vehicle going northbound near Pueblo Boulevard and tried to stop McSwane, who turned around and fled southbound in a "dangerous high-speed pursuit" on I-25, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office, before entering Huerfano County, allegedly crossing the highway median several times. Huerfano County deputies deployed spike strips onto the highway, which popped the tires, but McSwane continued for a few more miles, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office, whose deputies eventually performed a PIT maneuver as Huerfano County deputies boxed the vehicle in. A map shows the route a kidnapping, robbery, and sexual assault suspect took while he allegedly committed a string of crimes down Colorado's Front Range. CBS Deputies stopped the car near Walsenburg and got McSwane out at gunpoint and taken into custody without further incident, according to the sheriff's office. The woman, who was uninjured, told deputies she was carjacked in Aurora about four hours earlier after McSwane allegedly forced himself into her car, threatened her, and, while driving, touched her inappropriately and made her touch him as well. She went on to tell investigators that McSwane threatened to shoot a gas station clerk in Colorado City if she didn't give him a lighter. That clerk was also uninjured. Shane McSwane Pueblo County Sheriff's Office McSwane now faces charges of second-degree kidnapping, two counts of aggravated robbery, unlawful sexual contact, second-degree motor vehicle theft, two counts of menacing with a deadly weapon, felony vehicular eluding, reckless driving, and driving under restraint and could face additional charges, the sheriff's office said. "I want to commend our deputies as well as the Huerfano County Sheriff's Office for their swift, professional, and courageous actions during this highly dangerous situation. Their decisive response saved this victim's life," Pueblo County Sheriff David J. Lucero said in a statement. "We are thankful this ended without harm to the victim and the public." McSwane was booked into the Pueblo County Jail and is due in court Tuesday afternoon. Court records show he has a criminal history going back to 2010 for charges including drugs, escape from custody, theft, domestic violence, public indecency, harassment, and more in Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, El Paso, Jefferson, Larimer, and now Pueblo counties.

Kidnapping victim rescued after 30-mile chase on I-25

(PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo.) — A man has been arrested and a kidnapping victim rescued from his car after a high-speed chase on I-25 early Monday morning, May 26. According to the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office (PCSO), deputies responded on Monday morning to a robbery call at the Circle K in northern Colorado City, just off I-25. As they were responding, deputies learned the suspect had left the scene in a 2020 grey Ford Escape. Around the same time, a woman called PCSO to report that her daughter had been kidnapped Sunday night in Aurora and that her cell phone was pinging near the same Circle K. The Ford Escape from the Circle K robbery also matched the description of the kidnapping victim's car. A deputy patrolling I-25 spotted the Ford heading northbound near the Pueblo Boulevard exit and tried to pull the car over. PCSO said the driver sped away from the deputy, heading southbound on I-25 at dangerously high speeds from Pueblo County into Huerfano County. The driver, later identified as 28-year-old Shane McSwane, reportedly refused to stop and crossed the interstate median several times, endangering other drivers on the interstate. Huerfano County deputies successfully used stop sticks on I-25 north of Walsenburg, deflating some of the Ford's tires. According to PCSO, McSwane continued driving several more miles before PCSO deputies were able to PIT maneuver the car. Huerfano and Pueblo County deputies were able to box the Ford in with their patrol cars, and McSwane was taken into custody at gunpoint. PCSO said the kidnapping victim was visibly shaken and emotionally distraught, but was uninjured. 'I want to commend our deputies as well as the Huerfano County Sheriff's Office for their swift, professional, and courageous actions during this highly dangerous situation,' said Pueblo County Sheriff David J. Lucero. 'Their decisive response saved this victim's life. We are thankful this ended without harm to the victim and the public.' Through their investigation, deputies learned the woman was carjacked around 11 p.m. on Sunday night, May 25, as she was stopped near I-225 and I-70 in Aurora due to a traffic crash. The victim said McSwane approached her car and forced his way in, threatening her and taking control of the car. McSwane then allegedly drove the woman against her will for nearly four hours, going as far south as the town of Aguilar. While driving, McSwane allegedly made sexual comments to the victim, touched her, and forced her to touch him. After stopping in Aguilar for gas, the victim said McSwane drove north on I-25 to the Circle K in Colorado City, where he allegedly went inside and threatened the clerk that he would shoot them if they didn't give him a lighter. The clerk was uninjured, PCSO said. McSwane was arrested on a slew of charges, including: Second-Degree Kidnapping Two counts of Aggravated Robbery Unlawful Sexual Contact Second-Degree Motor Vehicle Theft Two counts of Menacing with a Deadly Weapon Felony Vehicular Eluding Reckless Driving Driving Under Restraint PCSO said McSwane could face additional charges after the victim's debit card and drug paraphernalia were found on him during his arrest. The victim's car was seized pending a search warrant. McSwane is due in Pueblo County Court on May 28. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
