Former Viking Shaquill Griffin set to visit the Las Vegas Raiders during minicamp

Former Viking Shaquill Griffin set to visit the Las Vegas Raiders during minicamp One of the more underrated members of the Minnesota Vikings' defense in 2024 is one step closer to officially not returning for a re-run in 2025. Shaquill Griffin, who played in all 17 games and started three last year for the Vikings, visited the Las Vegas Raiders this week, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. The Raiders are coached by Pete Carroll, who drafted Griffin in 2017 as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Griffin spent his first four years with Carroll in Seattle, intercepting six passes and breaking up 40. He was selected for his lone Pro Bowl in 2019. The Vikings are comfortable with their current cornerback room and weren't planning on bringing Griffin back. He intercepted two passes in 2024 and posted a respectable 63.7 PFF grade, but he turns 30 next month. If he remains unsigned into training camp and the Vikings don't like the progress they've seen from their young cornerbacks, perhaps they will look to bring Griffin back on another one-year deal. But right now, a potential reunion for him would be with his first head coach in the NFL.

Shaquill Griffin set to visit the Las Vegas Raiders

Shaquill Griffin set to visit the Las Vegas Raiders The Seattle Seahawks have slowly been attempting to build better depth at the cornerback position this offseason. One of their targets in recent months has been a former Seahawk by the name of Shaquill Griffin. Originally the 90th overall selection by Seattle during the 2017 NFL draft, Griffin has bounced around the league in recent seasons, most recently playing with the Minnesota Vikings in 2024. Griffin and the Seahawks have met twice this offseason, but it appears there is another team interested in the services of a former Pro Bowl caliber corner: the Las Vegas Raiders. Unsurprisingly, head coach Pete Carroll is also reuniting with a familiar face. Pete Carroll and John Schneider having interest in the same players is pretty par for the course, as the two of them drafted exceptionally well together during their shared tenure in the Pacific Northwest. Should Griffin decide he want to play under his old head coach once more, there are still options out there for the Seahawks to sign to help bolster their cornerback depth. Namely, Rasul Douglas and recently released Jaire Alexander. Seattle is in no hurry. Griffin, Douglas and especially Alexander would represent solid options to put into the mix alongside Riq Woolen and Devon Witherspoon. With training camp, the preseason, and the eventual cuts all teams in the league are bound to make just over the horizon, the Seahawks will likely have more than a few options at their disposal to pick from.

Free agent CB Shaquill Griffin to visit Raiders

Free agent cornerback Shaquill Griffin is visiting the Raiders, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports. Griffin, 29, played for Raiders coach Pete Carroll in Seattle, spending four seasons there after the Seahawks made him a third-round pick in 2017. Griffin took a free agent visit to Seattle earlier this offseason but did not sign. Griffin, whose only Pro Bowl came in 2019 with the Seahawks, spent last season with the Vikings. He appeared in all 17 games with three starts for the Vikings in 2024, recording two interceptions and six passes defensed, while playing 572 defensive snaps and three on special teams. He also has spent time with Jacksonville, Houston and Carolina. Griffin has appeared in 106 games with 82 starts in his career, totaling 70 passes defensed with nine interceptions.

PFF sees one glaring need for the Vikings going into training camp

Most of the NFL rosters are built for the 2025 season, barring some exceptions. Some teams, like the Steelers and Saints, may make some last-minute changes at quarterback. Other teams may add veterans after training camp as they look to avoid the hottest days of the year being in pads and helmets, losing so much weight in sweat, hearing the same messages they have heard for years. Despite all that, PFF has picked one need for each team heading into those tough training camp days. In the case of the Vikings, they tabbed cornerback as an issue for the team. They write, "The Vikings will be replacing more than 1,000 coverage snaps following the departures of Stephon Gilmore and Shaquill Griffin. They'll now have to lean on Isaiah Rodgers, who earned a 70.5 PFF coverage grade with the Eagles last season, and Mekhi Blackmon, who is coming off a torn ACL." The Vikings made a move late into training camp for Stephon Gilmore, could they make a similar move this year again? Time will tell.
