Sharjah City Municipality warns against circulating, displaying or selling Zamzam water

Sharjah City Municipality announced a ban on the sale and circulation of Zamzam water in commercial establishments operating in Sharjah, adding that it would intensify its inspection campaign of these establishments to ensure their compliance with its decision. The municipality's move is aimed at curbing commercial fraud and public deception schemes and tampering with products in line with its goal of making public health a priority and providing safe and healthy food to the public in accordance with applicable health requirements and standards. Khalid Al Hammadi, Head of Food Control Section, said the municipality was closely monitoring markets and conducting regular and surprise inspection campaigns to detect any food products that did not meet health requirements and standards and curb fraud or public deception, especially in such products as Zamzam water, which was hard to be distinguished from other waters. Therefore, the municipality is constantly updating requirements and permits in line with its objectives and strategy for regulating the work of commercial and food establishments, he added. Al Hammadi explained that the municipality began forwarding circulars to commercial establishments prohibiting the sale, circulation and display of Zamzam water, especially after inspection teams succeeded in arresting a person who had been using deception and commercial fraud to win illicit gain. The suspect used to fill water from the tanks of his house into plastic bottles with labels indicating that they contained Zamzam water and to sell and promote it on social media platforms, selling large quantities of it for large sums of money, he said. Al Hammadi pointed out that the municipality was hereby urging the public to co-operate with it by refraining from buying Zamzam water from local markets and reporting any violations to the call center at 993. The municipality was also calling on the public not to deal with any unlicenced food establishments and not to buy any products through social media unless they had verified their source and made sure that such products had been licensed by the competent authorities in the emirate, he added.

Man arrested for selling fake Zamzam water in Sharjah

Listen to article Authorities in Sharjah have dismantled an illegal water bottling operation after discovering a residential property being used to bottle and sell ordinary tank water as Zamzam water, Khaleej Times reported on Wednesday. The Sharjah City Municipality conducted the raid in coordination with its Control and Inspection Department and the Health Control and Safety Department following routine inspections that raised red flags. Officials observed vehicles loading bottled water from a house, prompting immediate action. During the raid, one individual was caught on the premises, where cartons and plastic bottles falsely labelled as Zamzam water were being filled under unsanitary conditions. The counterfeit water was being sold at inflated prices and promoted via social media platforms. Authorities immediately launched legal and administrative procedures against the suspect. 'The municipality works continuously to monitor negative behaviours that affect community health, taking legal measures against anyone attempting to defraud people through illegitimate means,' said Obaid Al Teneiji, Director General of Sharjah City Municipality. During the inspection, financial records linked to RT Mineral Water Trading Company, a licensed business owned by the suspect, were recovered. Authorities said the individual was using the legitimate company to issue invoices and mislead customers. The Sharjah Municipality contacted the Department of Economic Development, which promptly shut down the business. Sharjah Police have taken the suspect into custody for further investigation. All counterfeit goods were confiscated, and the residential property used in the operation was sealed in accordance with established procedures. Municipal authorities urged the public to report any suspicious commercial activities and reaffirmed their commitment to public health and consumer protection.

First phase of Sharjah fire-safe building project to be completed on June 1

Engineer Khalifa Bin Hadda Al Suwaidi, Director of Technical Services at Sharjah City Municipality, revealed that 90 per cent of the first phase of the fire-safe building project ordered to be carried out by His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah has been completed. The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed by June 1, he said, adding that the fire that broke out in one of the city's high-rise buildings a few days ago started inside one of the high-rise apartments and was confined there. He explained that the fire did not spread due to the project to replace the flammable aluminum facades with fire-resistant ones. The fire was put out and brought under control in record time, especially given that the project completion rate for the tower was 70 per cent, he said, noting that the consequences would have otherwise been dire. Al Suwaidi said so in a conversation with Mohammed Hassan Khalaf, Director General of Sharjah Broadcasting Authority, on the Direct Line programme.
