Awadhesh Prasad demands Rs One crore ex gratia for kin of late Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari
Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 25 (ANI): Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Awadhesh Prasad on Sunday met with the family of Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari, the 23-year-old Army officer who died while saving a fellow soldier during an operational task in North Sikkim, and demanded that the Uttar Pradesh government announces ex gratia worth Rs One crore for the deceased officer's kin. 'I salute his (Shashank Tiwari) bravery and his mother for giving birth to such a person, who has made his name immortal. This is a tragedy for the country. Although money can't estimate the value of life, I demand that the Uttar Pradesh government provide financial assistance worth Rs one crore to the family of the deceased (Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari),' said Prasad, who represents the Ayodhya Lok Sabha constituency. 'I will get a memorial built in the name of the martyr from the MP fund. I will talk to the family members,' he added. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari was laid to rest with full state honours on Saturday. There is a constant rush of public representatives at his house with people offering their condolences. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former MLA Indra Pratap Tiwari also reached the officer's residence and paid his tribute while expressing sorrow over the unfortunate demise of the Shashank Tiwari. 'He was from our assembly. (His death is) very painful and sad incident. Our government is constantly with martyrs. Rs 50 lakh have been announced, we thank the Chief Minister profusely,' he added. In an extraordinary display of courage, leadership, and comradeship, Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari of SIKKIM SCOUTS of the Indian Army made the ultimate sacrifice while saving a fellow soldier during an operational task in North Sikkim on 22 May 2025. The 23-year-old officer, commissioned less than six months ago on 14 December 2024, was leading a Route Opening Patrol towards a Tactical Operating Base (TOB) in Sikkim--a key post being prepared for future deployment. Around 11:00 AM, Agniveer Stephan Subba, a member of the patrol, lost footing while crossing a log bridge and was swept away by a powerful mountain stream. Demonstrating remarkable presence of mind, selfless leadership, and unwavering commitment to his team, Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari instinctively leapt into the treacherous waters to save the Agniveer without hesitation. Another soldier, Naik Pukar Katel, also followed immediately in support. Together, they managed to rescue the drowning Agniveer. However, Lieutenant Tiwari was tragically swept away by the forceful current. Despite desperate efforts by his patrol, his body was recovered 800 metres downstream by 11:30 AM. (ANI)

Tearful adieu to army officer who lost life while rescuing comrade in Sikkim
1 2 Ayodhya: Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari (23) of the Sikkim Scouts, Gorkha Rifle regiment, who laid down his life while saving a fellow soldier in Sikkim, was cremated with state honours at Jamthara Ghat on the banks of the Saryu in Ayodhya on Saturday. His father, Jang Bahadur Tiwari, performed the last rites. The mortal remains of Lt Shashank arrived at Ayodhya Military Hospital on Friday night. On Saturday morning, army officials brought the body from the military hospital to his residence from where thousands of residents joined the funeral procession and paid tribute to him. Amid the chants of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Shaheed Shashank Tiwari Amar Rahein', army personnel carried the body to Jamthara Ghat where the funeral was performed with state honours. UP minister Surya Pratap Shahi, Ayodhya district magistrate Nikhil Tikaram Funde, SSP Gaurav Grover, senior officers from the Dogra Regiment Centre, legislators Ved Prakash Gupta, Ramchandra Yadav, Amit Singh, mayor Girish Pati Tripathi, former MP Lallu Singh, former ministers Pawan Pandey and Anand Sen Yadav and Samajwadi Party district president Paras Nath Yadav paid tributes to Lt Shashank. On Thursday, Lt Shashank was leading a route-clearing team from the 1st Battalion Sikkim Scouts when he jumped into the river to save a fellow soldier from being swept away by the strong current. While he managed to pull his comrade, AV Stephan Subba, from the jaws of death, he lost his life in the process. Shashank, who completed his training at the National Defence Academy and was commissioned on Dec 14, 2024, was his parents' only child.

The mortal remains of 22-year-old Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari, who died while saving a fellow soldier during a patrol operation in Sikkim, reached his residence in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya. The funeral will be held on Saturday at Jamthara Ghat with full military and state honours. Tiwari, a resident of Gaddopur in Ayodhya Cantonment had joined the Indian Army last year after clearing the National Defence Academy (NDA) entrance examination in 2019. He was posted in Sikkim on his first assignment. His mortal remains were flown from Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri and reached Ayodhya late on Friday. According to officials, the officer lost his life during a routine patrol on Thursday when a fellow soldier slipped into a river with a strong current. Lt Tiwari jumped in to rescue him and succeeded, but was swept away in the process and could not be saved. Ayodhya City Magistrate Rajesh Mishra said the officer's father, Jung Bahadur Tiwari, who works in the Merchant Navy and is currently posted in the United States, is expected to reach Ayodhya by Saturday morning. Family members said Lt Tiwari was bright in academics and had always aspired to serve the nation. He attended a school in Faizabad before joining the NDA. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who visited Ayodhya on Friday to offer prayers at Hanumangarhi and inaugurate the Hanumat Katha Mandapam, also paid tribute to the officer's courage and sacrifice. The chief minister announced that a memorial would be built in Lt Tiwari's honour in Ayodhya and that financial assistance of ₹ 50 lakh has been sanctioned for his family by the state government.
