Scattered mounds of plastic packets of various food items, single-use water bottles, and carry bags across the city have become a sight of discomfort for everyone.
On Thursday, the state celebrated World Environment Day based on the theme of reducing single use plastic.
However, the bizarre contradiction lies in the fact that even the posters and banners put across the city advocating for reduced plastic usage are often made of 'plastic' themselves.
Various govt and private functions too have been rampantly using single-use plastic water bottles across the state, leaving dumps of scattered bottles at the programme venues, contradicting the message of sustainability that the authorities claim to promote.
On Friday, forest department headquarter in Doranda was riddled with plastic waste a day after environment day programme. Speaking to TOI, principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife) Shasikar Samanta acknowledged the issue and said it is difficult to stop the use of plastic water bottles.
"Although the use of plastic water bottles is not banned, we must try to minimise their use. Avoiding the use of plastic has become a challenge nowadays.
As far as yesterday's event is concerned, the bottles will be cleaned on the premises and sent for recycling. Workers have been employed for clearing it," he added.
