'We are desparate to go back home', say Kashmiris in Uttarakhand

Congratulations! You have successfully cast your vote Login to view result DEHRADUN: Kashmiris in Uttarakhand - students, teachers and professionals - who faced threats and violence from right-wing groups after the Pahalgam attack , are desperate to head home. Though the announcement of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan on Saturday evening came as a relief for them, the fear of being targeted again remains a cause for the heavy cross-border shelling in the past few days, members of the Kashmiri diaspora in the state say they are eager to return to their families, but travel restrictions and lack of transport have left them Shaukat, a BSc (Agriculture) student from Poonch - one of the worst-affected areas in cross-border shelling - told TOI on Saturday that he didn't leave after the Pahalgam incident when threats were issued by some radical elements. "I didn't leave since assurances were given by the local administration in Doon regarding our safety, but later when I wanted to return home, I couldn't do so due to travel and security restrictions. My family has been pleading with me to come back," said Shaukat, 19, whose hometown lies just 5-7 km from the Line of Control (LoC).Commenting on the 'severity of the situation' in his hometown, he claimed the current situation is unlike anything experienced before."It was different this time. Damage was massive - people died, and homes were destroyed. My family took shelter in Mendhar, 22 km from the border. I wanted to be with them by any means. I spoke to them soon after the (ceasefire) announcement and then said that I can now think about when to come. I, along with other students from Kashmir, have now decided to appear in the exams after 10 days and then go home," said Kashmiri from Bandipora, Mohsin Abbas Dar, who has been living in Dehradun for almost four years while working at an educational institution, expressed happiness at the ceasefire but also had some apprehensions."Every time there is a terror attack in Kashmir, the ordinary citizens living in other states, who had nothing to do with it, face threats. But people forget that when there is cross-border shelling or firing in Kashmir or Jammu, it is the same ordinary citizens who suffer, like this time. We were immensely worried for our family members and wanted to return to them but were helpless. As of now, we are relieved, but the fear remains... you never know what to expect," said Mohsin.
