Beloved discount grocery chain has massive US plans
There's a common theme in the news lately, and it's a disconcerting one: store closure after store closure. From family-owned businesses shuttering operations after being successful for decades to major-name chains announcing store closures or simply declaring chapter 11 bankruptcy, brick-and-mortar retail is going through wave after wave of distressing changes. Don't miss the move: SIGN UP for TheStreet's FREE Daily newsletter Between the threat of President Trump's tariffs, the ensuing trade war, and the constant increase in customers turning to online shopping over going to the store, many retailers are navigating extremely rough waters. Another concern customers are facing is the rise in costs of basic household needs such as groceries. Costs have risen as much 7.9% for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs, while other categories have gone up between 0.7% and 3.8%, according to the U.S. Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics. With many people's salaries staying the same in 2025 or only going up in very small percentages - 2025 planned increases are projected to be on average 3.7%, compared with 3.8% in 2024, according to WTW's Global Salary Budget Planning Report. This leaves many consumers in need of a way to still buy necessities, but spend less. While it's a worrying situation for many, one company sees a massive opportunity in the current economic climate, and it has a major plan to help people save money. Image source: Shutterstock The privately owned German grocery store chain Aldi has announced that it intends to open a total of 800 new locations by the end of 2028. Of those, 225 are coming in 2025, following the 120 the chain opened in 2024. So far, that means Aldi has a total of 2,400 locations at present, making it the third-largest grocery chain after Walmart and Kroger. Some of the newest stores are in Las Vegas, with one at 621 Marks Street in Henderson, Nevada, and 2106 W. Craig Road in North Las Vegas, Nevada. Related: Aldi takes page out of Costco playbook "At our new Las Vegas-area Aldi stores, shoppers will find that every decision we make, from our product selection to store layout, is to provide our customers with the best products at the lowest possible prices of any national grocer," said Shawn Eddy, regional vice president for Aldi. "Our customers can save up to 36% on an average household's shopping list. As shoppers look for better ways to stretch their dollar, Aldi is providing the Las Vegas area with easier access to quality groceries at affordable prices." With so many customers cringing at how much a cart of groceries costs them these days, it's no surprise that many are turning to discount retailers to keep food on the table for their families. Aldi has been at the discount grocery game for a long time - it opened its first U.S. stores in 1976 - and has always chosen to do things a bit differently. For instance, customers are asked to bring reusable bags and pay a quarter to "rent" a cart, which they get back when they return it. According to Aldi, these are just a few of the ways it cuts costs to keep prices low for its customers. Customer hunger for better prices doesn't stop at the grocery store, either. Retail chains such as TJX, home to Marshall's and TJ Maxx, among others, is also heating up as people look for lower prices on clothing and household goods. CNBC pundit Jim Cramer recently called TJX stock "the real winner" for investors, which is up 6.67% this year so far. Eggs under $5, other bargains on grocery shelves as Aldi debuts Thursday in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Aldi, the fastest growing grocery store chain in the U.S., makes its Las Vegas debut on Thursday, opening a stores in Henderson and North Las Vegas. And if you need a reason to go, eggs are cheaper than Smith's and Albertsons. A dozen Grade A eggs (cage-free) were priced at $4.47 during a media preview event on Tuesday afternoon. The stores opening Thursday are at: 621 Marks St. in Henderson 2106 W. Craig Road in North Las Vegas The opening date for a third store in the southwest valley at Rainbow Boulevard and Arby Avenue is expected in May, according to a company news release. 8 News Now has learned that a fourth store is planned in Henderson, near Eastern Avenue and Horizon Ridge Parkway in a former Albertson's location. Officials at Tuesday's event would not confirm that information. Thursday's grand opening events are scheduled at 8 a.m., with special giveaways for the first 100 customers. Normal business hours for the two stores are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Aldi prides itself on helping its customers save money. They do it primarily through store-brand products, although you'll see some national brands, too. The stores are less than half the size of a typical Las Vegas supermarket, and you won't get mailers with the weekly specials. You can find those online at Shawn Eddy, Aldi's regional vice president, said saving money is a major focus for the chain. 'Price is key for us. We're the price leader, which we believe is why we're the nation's fastest growing grocer right now,' Eddy said. You'll bag your own groceries and plunk down a quarter to use a cart (you'll get it back when you return the cart … see the video below). And if Aldi is thrifty, there's no shortage of interesting items on store shelves. Produce offerings include Cotton Candy grapes, Cara Cara navel oranges and raspberry oranges, described as similar to a blood orange but sweeter. Specialty cheeses — more than 50 varieties, including imports — meats and seafood are available. 'We have a lot of great products, great costs. We have our Aldi Finds aisle back there,' Eddy said, pointing to a section of 100 unique items every week that the stores don't always offer. 'Our customers seem to love that. They can come in and get seasonally trendy items, things that we don't always carry. It's fun. You can get shoes, to a backpack, to a lawnmower.' Kim Brazington, the director of national buying and a 'certified cheese professional,' said Aldi has the products that are right for the time of the year. 'It's a great shopping experience because it's quick, and then we've got the products that you need and you want, like when you're going to need them. So, for a grilling season or for the summertime, we're going to have a fresh goat or that marinated mozzarella type of product,' Brazington said. 'And also, you never really know what you're going to find in our Aldi Finds selection,' she said. Aldi looks for items that are fun and innovative. 'Anything from like a truckle from the U.K. all the way to baked lemon ricotta,' Brazington said. She's looking for what's next, too. 'Sheep's milk cheese is a really great kind of step from goat's milk cheese,' Brazington said. It has the benefits of being easy to digest without some of the flavor that sometimes turns people off from goat's milk. 'I think sheep's milk cheese next year is going to be kind of the next big thing because sometimes the goat milk flavor that comes through on a goat cheese is a little bit earthy,' Brazington said. LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The first two ALDI locations in the Las Vegas valley will open on Thursday, April 24, the company announced on Tuesday. The first 100 customers at each store will win a gift bag. The grocery chain will open its Henderson store at 621 Marks St. and its North Las Vegas store at 2106 W. Craig Road on the same day at 9 a.m. A third store in the southwest valley — Rainbow Boulevard at Arby Avenue — is expected to open in May, an ALDI news release said. A gift bag filled with ALDI-exclusive products will go to each of the first 100 customers at the Henderson and North Las Vegas locations. They will also get a commemorative quarter-sized ALDI poker chip that can be used to unlock the carts and a gift card as part of the ALDI Golden Ticket giveaway program, which gives entrants a chance to win part of $2,200 in prizes. Aldi expansion grows to 3 Las Vegas valley locations
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — When fans found out Aldi was going to open a store in Henderson, there was a buzz in the community but very little information from the grocery chain based in Batavia, Illinois. Now, as the opening of that store draws nearer at 611 Marks St. — next to the Best Buy near the Galleria at Sunset mall — two more locations are taking shape in the Las Vegas valley. The opening dates have become a bit of a mystery. Information earlier this week on Google Maps was not confirmed by Aldi officials, but suggested that all three locations would open on April 16. The date, which has now been removed from Google Maps, seemed unlikely as construction continues at a North Las Vegas location (Craig Road and Clayton Street) and a southwest valley location (Rainbow Boulevard at Arby Avenue). Aldi officials responded to questions emailed on Tuesday with this statement on Friday: 'We are excited to share that our stores in Las Vegas and North Las Vegas are expected to open later this spring. We have lots of fun plans coming to the market so as we get closer to the opening, we'll be sure to reach back out with more details on the new stores.'-Shawn Eddy, Moreno Valley Divisional Vice President at ALDI When the Henderson location was revealed in documents filed with the city, plans showed the store taking over a portion of a closed Bed, Bath and Beyond location. The North Las Vegas plan is similar, occupying a little more than half of a former 24 Hour Fitness location. The third location appears to be in a new building in the fast-growing southwest valley. Grocery Outlet Bargain Market expands in Henderson, customers hope for affordable options Aldi is known as a no-frills store with good deals on its own branded products, building a following from loyal customers across the U.S. Aldi claims it can save shoppers up to 40% on their grocery bill. In March, the company announced it would expand with 800 new stores over a five-year period. It will be a new experience for a lot of shoppers when the Las Vegas locations begin to open. Aldi prides itself on thrifty innovations — like its system to deposit a quarter to use a grocery cart, and then getting the quarter back when you put it back. But mostly, it's about the thrift. The chain requires reusable bags (it sells its own) and it shelves groceries in their original shipping boxes. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
