Shawn Trochim breaking barriers as MCC Athletic Director
WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — Shawn Trochim became the first Black athletic director at McLennan Community College when she took over the role in 2004. In the past two decades, she has helped lead MCC as one of the most successful junior college athletic programs in the state.
Trochim's path to athletic director started in Waco, where she thrived as a star basketball player at Waco High. She continued her career as a player at MCC before capping off her time as a collegiate athlete at Texas A&M.
After graduating, Trochim returned to MCC as a volunteer assistant for women's basketball for one season before being brought onto the staff full-time.
Trochim felt extra pressure after being named the first Black athletic director, but she knew that she was more than capable of excelling in the role.
'It was important to make sure I was crossing T's and dotting I's,' Trochim said. 'It's about having pride, coming to work every day and loving what you do.'
In the 21 years that Trochim has been leading the Highlanders, teams have combined for 24 national championships and has boasted 120 All-Americans.
'I always knew that I knew athletics, and I knew MCC, so when you put those two things together you can find some success.'
