Decatur homeless shelter receives $7,500 gift, plans to support more women and children
DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — An emergency homeless shelter in Decatur stays afloat and continues its services thanks to a recent grant. Over the weekend, God's Shelter of Love was one of five organizations gifted money at the 'She Gave' Awards.
Dan Watkins, the non-profit's executive director, said $7,500 will help them continue to care for dozens of women and children at the two shelters. He said it's the only emergency shelter program for women and children in the city.
'I think it's important because the need continues to grow for our services,' Watkins said. 'But more importantly than that, there are a lot of ladies who just need somebody to believe in them.'
The organization helps them connect to resources, case support, spiritual care, and people who can assist with employment opportunities. It also puts a temporary roof over their heads and provides people with food so they can get off the streets.

But Watkins knows it goes beyond just that.
'We hear their stories, help resource them. Just empower them to get out of the situation they're in and live their life again,' he said.
The organization is starting a new monthly giving community called the 'Matthew 25 Circle.' Watkins hopes it encourages women to support the shelter and donate $49 each month.
