Police remove 88 children from church summer camp after abuse claims
State and county agents removed nearly 90 children from a Christian summer camp in Iowa this month amid allegations of abuse, according to local law enforcement. Camp leadership has publicly denied that any abuse occurred. Kingdom Ministry of Rehab and Recreation's three-week Shekinah Glory Camp in southeast Iowa's Louisa County was cut short June 12 and 13, when law enforcement executed search warrants on the camp and another property owned by a Kingdom Ministry staff member. The camp serves youth from Myanmar's Chin ethnic group who are struggling with substance abuse issues. The area is home to a significant Chin community, but youth came from around the country to attend the camp.

88 children placed into protective custody after reports of abuse at Iowa religious center
More than 80 children were placed into protective custody after an Iowa sheriff's office conducted a child protective custody operation at a religious camp last week. The Louisa County Sheriff's Office in eastern Iowa conducted a search warrant at the Kingdom Ministry of Rehab and Recreation and the Shekinah Glory Camp from June 12 to June 13 after authorities received reports about child abuse and endangerment, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. The sheriff's office, along with the Iowa Department of Health Human Services, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Columbus Junction Police Department were able to take 88 children into protective custody, according to the news release. All of the 88 children were attendees of the Kingdom Ministry of Rehab and Recreation and the Shekinah Glory Camp, according to the news release. The children were taken to Wapello Methodist Church to meet with multiple child protection workers "and provided to their parents, HHS and temporary foster care to ensure the safety of all involved until safe return to parents/guardians," the release said. The news release did not say why authorities believed the children were in danger, how old the children were, why they were at the camp, or if anyone was arrested. Sheriff Brandon Marquardt did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A website for the Kingdom Ministry of Rehabilitation and Recreation says it is located in Columbus Junction, which was "the birthplace of Arthur E. Carson, the first missionary to Myanmar Chin state." The website says its mission is 'Assisting individuals in breaking free from addiction through God's Word, offering food and shelter to those in need, and supporting individuals during fasting and prayer.' The website lists Shekinah Glory Camp as ongoing from June 8 to June 29 but details are listed in what appears to be the Hakha Chin language. The investigation is ongoing, according to the news release. José Mendiola is a breaking news reporter for the Register. Reach him at jmendiola@ or follow him on X @mendiola_news.
