Elk Island National Park restricting weekend visitors to reduce heavy traffic
A national park east of Edmonton is restricting some access to try to reduce traffic congestion.
Elk Island National Park opened for the season last week, but potential visitors are being encouraged to consider coming at off-peak times or to visit other locations in the region.
Representatives from the park 40 kilometres east of the city limit on Highway 16 said in a recent media release heavy traffic has led to several safety risks for staff and visitors.
They said they may have to close the main gate and restrict people from entering to maintain safety.
Instead, they encourage visitors to come during quiet times on weekdays or in the morning on weekends before 11 a.m., after which people could be denied access.
Elk Island also says it may have to temporarily close its gates at night due to more visits during dark sky events.
Other area destinations include the Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Recreation Area, the Strathcona Wilderness Centre and Métis Crossing.
