Tami Sawyer hires civil rights attorney Ben Crump after being detained by MPD

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County General Sessions Court Clerk Tami Sawyer has hired well-known civil rights attorney Ben Crump after being detained by Memphis police during a disturbance Tuesday at the Crosstown Concourse. Video from inside Global Cafe sparked melee at Crosstown Tuesday, police were called to the Global Cafe after a woman in the restaurant went live on Facebook and said she was being denied service and was being asked to leave. A number of people who saw the post showed up, and when officers arrived on the scene, a large fight broke out. Four people, including Sawyer, were detained. Sawyer was later released. One officer was injured and taken to the Regional One Medical Center in non-critical condition. Suspects accused of assaulting officers at Crosstown appear in court On her Instagram page Thursday, she issued the following statement: 'At this time, I have no comment on the actions of the Memphis Police Department against me and several others outside Crosstown Concourse. I am focused on healing from my injuries and have retained Attorney Ben Crump as legal counsel. In the meantime, I remain committed to serving the people of Shelby County and will continue executing my duties as General Sessions Court Clerk with the same dedication I have shown since my first day in office. I appreciate the support I have received and will provide further updates as appropriate.' Ben Crump has been involved in several high-profile civil rights cases across the country. He is currently representing the family members of Tyre Nichols in a $550 million civil lawsuit against the city of Memphis in the death of Nichols. The case is set to go to trial in July of 2026.
