Egypt's Telecom Authority Sets Deadline for Customs Duties on Imported Phones
Taarek Refaat
The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) warned customers in a post on its official Facebook page that they must pay the 37.5% customs duty on imported phone devices before April 7th.
The NTRA stated that the phones will be permanently suspended until the fees due to the Egyptian state are paid after this date.
Deputy Minister of Finance Sherif El-Kelany had previously confirmed in press statements that 95% of the phones in the Egyptian market are smuggled, resulting in a loss of $1.2 billion in taxes for the country's treasury.
