Battlefield box office: The highs & lows of Hindi war films
Have war films or military dramas in recent years drawn audiences to theatres the way JP Dutta's Border (1997) once did? After Operation Sindoor , filmmakers made a beeline to register titles related to it. The tussle of title rights doesn't come as a surprise given the rise in number of films related to the armed forces. In the past, Army veterans have told us that while films on the forces have improved technically with the use of CGI, VFX, and other special effects, the storylines are still lacking. They picked films like Haqeeqat (1964), Border (1997) and Lakshya (2004) as their personal favourites when it comes to authentic portrayal. In the recent years, 2019's Uri has been a gamechanger, along with Kesari (2019) and Shershaah (2021). Despite the high volume of films based on the armed forces, most have barely managed to pique audience interest. We take a look at some recent war films and how they performed: Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019) Vicky Kaushal in a still from Uri. Aditya Dhar's military drama, led by Vicky Kaushal , gave the country a new war cry, 'How's the josh?'. It was based on the 2016 Uri terrorist attack, carried out by four heavily armed Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists and the Indian Army's retaliatory surgical strike on terrorist infrastructure across the Line of Control (LoC). JP Dutta's iconic war epic was one of the early Bollywood war dramas where war was not just the backdrop of a love story but was the centre of the narrative. The film's story was inspired by the Battle of Longewala between India and Pakistan during the war of 1971. The song Sandese Aate Hain gave the nation a patriotic anthem, which is popular to this day, and the film featured hundreds of real soldiers. 'Border was the best film of that era. All the details are accurate, be it the uniform or the operations procedure. It also explored the impact of war on a soldier and the people around him,' said Brigadier (retd) Gautam Ganguly in an earlier interview. The film, though couldn't get a decent footfall during its theatrical release, it earned the cult status over the years. ‘We could sense it blooming': Sidharth Malhotra-Kiara Advani's Shershaah costar recalls how love story of parents-to-be blossomed on sets
Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani are among the most popular couples of Bollywood who enjoy a massive fan base. Their love story blossomed on the sets of the war-drama film Shershaah, released in 2020. Most recently, the couple's co-star Himanshu Malhotra also shared his first-hand experience of witnessing their love blossoming on the movie sets. During a recent conversation with Indian Express' SCREEN, Himanshu Malhotra shared that they didn't know much about the love story between Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani. However, they could sense something blossoming between them. He said, 'We didn't know much about their love story, but we could sense it blooming. I think it was Palanpur where we saw both of them together. That's where the funeral sequence was shot.' Himanshu mentioned that it was the only time they saw Kiara Advani on set, as they later moved to Kargil for the shoot. According to him, it must be the time they started dating and that's when they met them, took pictures and sat together. 'I think the spark must just have started over there, probably where they shot the Chandigarh part. It must have escalated there,' he further added. In addition to this, he also talked about his 'nice' experience of working with Sidharth Malhotra in the war-drama film. He shared that the actor was 'very warm and cordial.' He shared that they, joined by Nikitin Dheer and Shiv Pandit, had become like a unit while shooting in Kargil. Walking down the memory lane, Malhotra remembered at the time Article 370 was imposed in Kashmir, Therefore, they were stuck in Kashmir, and they would have music sessions from morning till night in their free time when the shoot used to get cancelled. The 2020-released Shershaah was based on the life of PVC Vikram Batra, who was martyred in the Kargil War. Directed by Vishnuvardhan, the film is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. After being in a hush-hush relationship, Sidharth and Kiara got married in an intimate wedding in 2023. They announced that they're expecting their first child earlier this year in February. On the work front, Sidharth will be next seen in Param Sundari while Kiara has highly-awaited War 2 in the pipeline.

Himanshu Malhotra recalls witnessing early sparks between Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani on Shershaah sets: 'We could sense it blooming'
Actor Himanshu Malhotra , who played Major Rajiv Kapoor in the 2021 war drama Shershaah , recently opened up about his experience shooting the film and revealed some behind-the-scenes anecdotes—one of which involved witnessing the initial sparks of romance between lead actors Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani . In an interview with SCREEN, Himanshu recalled how he bagged the role in Shershaah quite unexpectedly. 'I had auditioned for a film for Kunal Kohli, but that didn't happen, and I got slightly disappointed. Then I gave a test for a film, but I didn't know it was for Shershaah. In the audition script, it was just written Captain Vikram, not even Batra was mentioned,' he shared. Months later, he received a call informing him he had been cast in Shershaah, backed by Dharma Productions and based on the Kargil War . Reflecting on his time with co-star Sidharth Malhotra, Himanshu said, 'Working with Sidharth was very nice. He was very warm and cordial. We were in Kargil. I shot there for 20 days, and he was there for 30-32 days. Along with us, there was Nikitin Dheer, Shiv Pandit—we had all become like a unit.' Himanshu also remembered how their bonding deepened due to unexpected circumstances. 'At that time, Article 370 was imposed in Kashmir. We were stuck in Kargil, and when the shoot used to get cancelled, we used to have music sessions from morning till night, and Sidharth was a part of that.' Touching upon Sidharth and Kiara's relationship, he recalled sensing something special brewing between the two. 'We didn't know much about their love story, but we could sense it blooming. I think it was Palanpur where we saw both of them together… That's where the funeral sequence was shot. That was the only time we saw Kiara, because after that we moved to Kargil,' Himanshu revealed. 'I think they must have just started then. We met them, took pictures, and all of us sat together… It must have escalated during the Chandigarh part.' Shah Rukh Khan, Kiara Advani, Diljit Dosanjh Bring Indian Swag To Met Gala 2025 Filming in Kashmir during such a politically tense time posed challenges for the cast and crew. 'It was a tense moment, but it was the only time we could shoot. Even the makers didn't know something like this would happen,' Himanshu said. 'Fortunately, the defence ministry, Dharma, and everyone else took care of us. We were surrounded by Army officers. We had some wonderful interactions with them.' Looking ahead, Himanshu Malhotra will next be seen in Kesari Veer , playing an antagonist alongside Vivek Oberoi. The film hits theatres on May 31. He also has Rana Naidu Season 2 in the pipeline.
