Jackson police investigate fatal shooting after body found near elementary school
Jackson police are investigating a fatal shooting after a body was found near an elementary school on Monday afternoon, May 19.
Jackson Public School District official Sherwin Johnson issued a statement saying Green Elementary School was placed on a temporary lockdown at approximately 1:45 p.m. Monday "due to reports of gunshots fired outside near the school."
The elementary school is located near Hillside Drive and Forest Avenue.
According to the Jackson Police Department, the body of an unidentified Black, male victim was found in the driveway of a church across the street from the school.
Public Information Officer Tommie Brown said the unidentified victim was shot multiple times.
No suspect information has been released.
Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said no one at the school was harmed; however, this incident was "disturbing."

"It's concerning. It's problematic because this happened across the street from an elementary school," Wade said. "School was in session. Babies were here.
"And this knucklehead, this idiot, whoever it is that decided to take this man's life was foolish and reckless, and we cannot have this here in the City of Jackson."
