Noida burns Rs 127 crore stamps to make way for digital papers
Noida: In a shift towards digitisation, the district administration destroyed over 64,000 unpurchased physical stamp papers worth Rs 127 crore on Sunday. After physical stamp papers were ordered to be out of circulation from March 11, the remaining stamp papers kept with the treasurer department were destroyed by burning them.
The destroyed stamp papers, which were stored in the district treasury, had become unusable. These included stamp papers of denominations between Rs 10,000 and Rs 25,000. The destruction took place at the Collectorate premises under the supervision of a district-level committee, and the process lasted nearly four hours.
Senior treasury officer Shikha Gupta said, "The remaining stock had to be destroyed as it was no longer valid after March 31.
We received orders from the govt to destroy all remaining high-denomination physical stamp papers, which are now invalidated. The destruction process was carried out under proper supervision, and a report was sent to the state govt."
A total of 64,637 stamp papers were destroyed, including 25,643 of Rs 25,000 denomination and 19,509 of Rs 20,000.
On March 11 this year, UP govt issued a notification stating that physical stamp papers of denomination value between Rs 10,000 and Rs 25,000, purchased before the notification date, could be used or returned until March 31.
