Relay for life gearing up for June
JEFFERSON — The American Cancer Society Relay for Life organizers are hoping for more teams of walkers to participate this year at the Ashtabula County event. 'Basically we are reaching out on social media,' said Lori Jean Shinkle, who is organizing the survivor events, which will take place June 28 at Giddings Park in Jefferson. The change from an all-night Relay for Life to a shorter event hurt the numbers of people involved, she said. The coronavirus pandemic also provided challenges for Relay for Life, with the result of fewer people participating. Shinkle said the amount of cancer survivors participating has dropped significantly. 'At one point, we had 144, and this year we have 37 [signed up so far],' she said. The event is scheduled to start at noon June 28, by connecting with Patsy's Run, Shinkle said. She said the survivors's dinner will follow shortly after and the opening walk, between 1-1:30 p.m. Shinkle said anyone interested in participating can call 440-344-7294 or 1-800-337-2345, or sign up online at which is the preferred method. Survivors receive a meal for them and a caregiver, a shirt and other prizes, Shinkle said. The event has taken place for decades at a variety of sites throughout Ashtabula County, including Kent State Ashtabula, Grand River Academy and the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds. The money raised is used to fund research to find cures for cancer, cancer prevention efforts and patient care efforts. Over the years a variety of speakers have shared their cancer survival stories with those in attendance. A variety of pre-relay fundraisers have already occurred or are in the planning stages. A polar bear plunge in the dead of winter provided a jolt to the body and some extra money to fight cancer. A spaghetti dinner for Relay for Life is scheduled for 4-7 p.m. May 1, through Team Imagine Believe, with adult tickets available for $12, and children 12 and under $7, said Annette Montgomery who is helping arrange the event at Ashcraft Industries in Kingsville Township.

Grand jury indicts man in connection to deadly hit-and-run last month
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A Chicago man accused of not reporting an accident in a deadly hit-and-run in south Peoria was indicted Tuesday by a Peoria County grand jury. Demoriele Sims, 36, faces a single count of failing to report an accident that killed 38-year-old Quentin Shinkle. If convicted, Sims faces up to 15 years in prison. The charge alleges Sims was in a 2010 Dodger Charger when he was allegedly 'involved in a motor vehicle accident… that resulted in the death of Shinkle and then fled the scene of that accident.' It also said he failed to report the accident within the required 30 minutes after the collision. On Jan. 13, officers responded to the 2100 block of West Dr. Martin Luther King Drive just after 1 a.m., Jan. 13, on a report of a man who was in the roadway. There, they found Shinkle in the street with injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. He was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died on Jan. 18. According to court records, the vehicle was registered to Sims and when it was found, the windshield on the driver's side was caved inward with damage to the bumper, the grill and the roof of the car, said Anna Perales of the state's attorney's office. Parts found at the scene matched the vehicle. Sims will next appear in court on March 6 for his arraignment hearing. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Chicago man ordered held pending trial in connection with deadly traffic collision
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A judge on Monday ordered that a Chicago man be held in custody pending the outcome of charges he failed to report a deadly traffic collision. Judge Mark Gilles also scheduled a Feb. 10 review hearing for Demoriele L. Sims, 36, who is charged with failing to report an accident that involved a death in connection with the Jan. 13 collision that left Quentin M. Shinkle, 38, dead. The charge alleges that he was in a 2010 Dodger Charger when he was allegedly 'involved in a motor vehicle accident… that resulted in the death of Quentin Shinkle and then fled the scene of that accident.' The charge also alleges he did not report the accident to authorities, as required, within 30 minutes of it occurring. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. On Jan. 13, officers responded to the 2100 block of West Dr. Martin Luther King Drive just after 1 a.m., Jan. 13, on a report of a man who was in the roadway. Parts found at the scene matched the vehicle. Sims was arrested on Thursday, a day before he appeared in court. During that interview with police, he allegedly admitted to hitting Shinkle, fleeing the scene and not reporting the crash. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
