A senior citizen from Kandivli had lodged a complaint of theft with the railway police, stating that he had boarded a Churchgate-bound fast train at Ram Mandir, and was to get off at Charni Road. Mid-journey, it was announced that the train would skip the halt at Charni Road. He hurriedly got off at Mumbai Central only to realise later that he had left behind the bag on the train. He took another train for Churchgate and checked the compartment he had boarded earlier. But the bag had vanished. The railway police's crime branch examined CCTV footage at various stations and learnt that the bag had been stolen by one Shivkumar Maurya from Vasai. He was taken into custody on May 29. The police have so far recovered Rs 6.52 lakh. Senior inspector Vijay Khedkar with inspector Rohit Sawant and assistant inspector Abhijeet Tailor probed the case.
