Shiwani Chakraborty on International Dance Day: Dance doesn't just move your body, it moves your soul

Shiwani Chakraborty Before stepping into the spotlight as an actor in Anupamaa , Shiwani Chakraborty was first known — to herself and those around her — for her dancing. Long before she faced the camera, she was drawn to the rhythm of movement, and her relationship with dance has remained deeply personal. 'I've always been passionate about acting,' she says, adding 'but dancing happens to be my first love. Dance is life for me. It's like oxygen — without it, I wouldn't be able to breathe, let alone live. That's not a line — it's a truth I live every single day.' Her journey began early, though the exact moment is hard for her to pinpoint. She says, 'I don't even remember when it all started. All I recall is competing in colony-level competitions back in my hometown, wearing sparkly costumes and dancing with everything I had. That little girl went on to stand on bigger stages, with brighter lights and louder applause.' In the ninth grade, Shiwani began formal training in Kathak and continued for three years. She shares, 'Though I couldn't complete my Visharad, the years of Kathak training gave me discipline and confidence — that foundation still shapes me. I also explored Salsa briefly and believe learning has no age.' Dance was also her first step toward independence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cost Of Amusement Park Equipment From Mexico Might Surprise You - See Tips Amusement Park Equipment | search ads Click Here Undo She explains, 'Dancing hasn't been just a passion — it also became the first source of making me independent. Along with learning dance, I taught dance and started earning through it at a young age. My students still remember me. They ask me to open a dance academy in our hometown — and that is definitely part of the dream.' Her early experiences eventually led her to national platforms, including one of India's most iconic dance shows. 'I'm proud to share that I participated not once, but thrice in Boogie Woogie ,' she recalls, and adds, 'Coming from a small town, that was a big deal for me. Dancing gave me identity, purpose, and strength. I'm incomplete without it.' For Shiwani, dance isn't just movement — it's emotion, expression, and a way of life. She says, 'Dance is closer to me than anything else. I strongly believe that a good dancer can be a great actor, because through dance you learn expression, emotion, and rhythm. It teaches you how to feel and how to make others feel. It's helped me become a better actor. I can tell you that every beat, every note, every gesture I learnt through dance is with me when I perform on screen. ' She sees dance as something deeper — a form of devotion and healing. 'Dancing, for me, is not just an art — it's a spiritual journey,' she says. 'Jab aap kisi kaam mein dil aur jaan lagate ho, woh aapke liye worship ban jaata hai. It has made me stronger — physically and emotionally. On days when I feel low, I dance. It lifts the energy in the room, it changes my mood, it shifts my mindset. It's my therapy.' On International Dance Day , Shiwani leaves a message for fellow dance lovers: 'Breathe. Dance. Repeat. That's my mantra. Keep dancing, keep flowing, keep growing. It's not just about teaching steps — it's about sharing a way of life. Respect dancers. Respect the art. Keep the vibe alive. Because dance doesn't just move your body — it moves your soul.'

Exclusive - Shiwani Chakraborthy opens up on shooting for Anupamaa and why she loves it

Actress Shiwani Chakraborthy , who is currently seen in Anupamaa , says that while shoots can get hectic, she feels blessed to have got good work. The actress adds that she loves her job, and waits to go on the set every day. 'As we all know how hectic it's been shooting daily 12/13 hours, but despite that tiredness, I always feel if I'm working, I'm blessed. As after COVID, every field has slowed down, people are not getting work. The only motivation I get is — come on Shiwani, God has given you work, you are blessed — and that makes it easy to go to set daily, whether it is monotonous or hectic. And also, I'm a workaholic person. I love holidays though, but after 2/3 days it's like ohh I'm missing my set,' she says. Shooting with like-minded people also has its perks, says the actress, adding, 'People with the same thinking, or say when you match vibes with them, it helps a lot in your performance too. Because after all, we stay more on set than home. So people with a good and healthy mindset are very important for your good work.' She adds, 'Good chemistry with your co-actors is an important part of shoots. I believe it's always give and take when it comes to performing, and if you and your co-actors have a good bond off-set, on-set it's visible in the scenes. You need someone to boost you or correct you. The actors with no jealousy and insecurity have the best chemistry ever, and I'm lucky to have such friends and actors around me — all are super talented and good souls. ' Working with Rajan Shahi is a dream come true, she says, adding, 'This is my first show with DKP, but I found this is an institution where you have to maintain discipline and focus on your work — which I think is very important for all the actors. They are always available for you if you need anything. If you want to communicate, they are a call away. And when you feel a home-like atmosphere in your workplace, automatically your performance speaks. ' Meanwhile, she also adds that she loves being part of TV. 'TV is always first. It's the audience's choice and views. Though people are now having many platforms, still we have TV audiences in good numbers. Because people from different places — cities, small towns, metro — all have their means of entertainment as TV. And so, TV has to be people's go-to comfort. Makers always try to keep their audience happy with the storyline or say whatever way to keep audiences hooked up with the show,' she says. ' She adds, 'TV shows are evolving and it will keep on growing. Our viewers are also evolving with time. So now makers are trying to change the patterns and also story so that viewers do not get bored. Because nowadays people want more natural things to watch. So yes, change is good for growth.'
