Japan Ground Self-Defense Force conducts annual large-scale live-fire drills
Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force held its annual live-fire exercises at the foot of Mount Fuji in central Japan on Sunday. The large-scale drills -- the 67th of their kind -- took place at the GSDF's Higashi-Fuji training area in Shizuoka Prefecture. They were based on a scenario of a supposed invasion of a remote island. GSDF personnel responded by bombing targets and firing shots from trenches. Osprey transport aircraft carried members of the GSDF's Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade, whose main missions include recapturing such islands in the event of an invasion. The Osprey aircraft will be deployed in phases at Saga Airport in the southwestern prefecture of Saga from next month. Defense equipment was displayed at the site of the exercises, including a newly unveiled launch system for an upgraded surface-to-ship missile. The GSDF says the missile would be used for counterattacks on enemy bases. GSDF officials say the drills are expected to use 76.6 tons of ammunition worth about 870 million yen, or roughly 6 million dollars. The exercises will conclude on Sunday night.

Driver arrested after car plunges onto expressway in central Japan
Police have arrested the driver of a car that fell onto an expressway in central Japan's Shizuoka Prefecture, sending two children to a hospital. The man is suspected of driving without a license and fleeing the scene after abandoning the vehicle. The passenger car broke through a roadside barrier in the city of Hamamatsu on Sunday afternoon and plunged onto the Tomei Expressway. Police say the two children inside the vehicle were taken to a hospital, but neither was injured. Emergency officials say one of them is 8 years old and the other is aged 7. Police had been searching for the driver, who fled the scene. They arrested 47-year-old Kurebayashi Akiya on Monday, who claims to be jobless and to live in the city of Omaezaki in Shizuoka Prefecture. The police have not disclosed whether the suspect has admitted to the charges. They say investigators found Kurebayashi walking alone in Hamamatsu earlier in the day. They say his driver's license was revoked about 10 years ago, and that the car was registered under someone else's name. They say the two children are not related to the man by family or blood, but they also say there is no indication of abduction. Investigators are looking into what kind of relationship they are in and other details of the incident, including why the suspect left the scene.

Design & Build Your Own Gundam Gunpla Kit At Bandai Hobby Museum Japan This Sept
Bandai is opening a new Hobby museum in Shizuoka, Japan, on 2 September this year, allowing visitors to not only learn about the history of plastic model kits like Gunpla and how they're made, but also design their own Gundam model kits to take home. The Bandai Hobby Center Plamo Design Industrial Institute Museum (or BHC PDII Museum for short) will be opening at the Bandai Hobby Center building in Shizuoka, Japan, and will feature a 'Study Room' to learn about the history of plastic model kits, alongside windows to give visitors a first-hand look into the Gunpla making process, offering them a glimpse of the kits being made and packaged in the factory. Additionally, the museum experience will also include an interactive Laboratory Area, where visitors can try their hands at creating their own customised Gunpla kits, from choosing the colours and sizes of each piece of their Gundam creations using a screen, to laying out the pieces on their plastic runners and even designing their Gunpla's packaging. Museum staff will then handle the injection moulding process for visitors to bring home their unique creations. What's more, each creation will be graded, and Bandai Spirits employees will select the top three kits each month for an award. Visits to the BHC PDII Museum will require advanced reservation, with a ticket lottery beginning on 2 June due to the expected high demand. Non-Japanese speakers don't have to worry either, as all museum displays and guidance will also be available in English. The BHC PDII Museum will open at the Bandai Hobby Center building in Shizuoka, Japan, on 2 September 2025. More information can be found on the museum's official website.
