Sault Ste. Marie Tribe hit by ransomware attack

Shondiin MayoICT The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians in Michigan fell victim this week to a ransomware attack that affected their computer systems. 'This attack impacted multiple computer and phone systems across the tribe, including the casinos, health centers and various businesses,' Chairman Austin Lowes stated in a Feb. 9 press release. Ransomware is a type of malicious software – or malware – that prevents you from accessing your computer files, systems, or networks and demands you pay a ransom for their return. Such attacks can lead to significant operational disruptions and the potential loss of vital information. In response to the attack on its computers, the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe has temporarily closed several departments and businesses, aiming to resume operations by the end of the week. Tribal leadership acknowledged the significant disruption the incident has caused for members and employees and said it is committed to resolving the issue promptly. Lowes said the incident has raised questions and concerns; however, because of its sensitive nature, he explained, 'There is little more we can share at this time and ask for your patience and understanding.' Limited services remain available to tribal members, including Anishinaabek Community and Family Services, Education Services and elder services. However, the Health Division is currently unable to provide comprehensive medical services. Updates will be shared through the tribe's official Facebook page. In 2023, more than 72 percent of businesses worldwide were affected by ransomware attacks, according to Statista. The United States healthcare sector is the primary target of ransomware attacks, with manufacturing and government facilities following closely behind. The FBI warns that individuals may inadvertently download ransomware by interacting with email attachments, advertisements, links, or compromised websites. Because of this unawareness, organizations won't know their system has been impacted until the device can no longer be accessed.
