Navy jobs you may not expect: Using social media to manage large crews
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Leah Parks graduated from ETSU with a degree in English and minors in communications and journalism. She graduated after the pandemic and didn't know what the next step should be. She decided to join the Navy, and she hasn't looked back! 'What am I going to do to have free healthcare and also travel and also serve something bigger than myself. I looked into the Navy, and they had the perfect job for me, which is to be a mass communications specialist, and here I am,' said Parks. Her job gives her creative freedom through social media, video, photography, and writing. She even created her own show for the George H. W. Bush aircraft carrier. 'So what Shop Hop is, is a social media series that goes around to different departments on the ship and asks each sailor what they do. So, one cool thing about an aircraft carrier, when we're fully stocked, we have 5,000 sailors, which is a lot of people, which means a lot of jobs, and a lot of responsibilities.' Nashville sailor now navigates the open sea Being from Kingsport, Tennessee, Parks was surprised by people from all over the country. 'Coming into the Navy, you are coming into a melting pot of cultures, of people with different backgrounds, religions, upbringings, and it really just teaches you how to serve with one another humbly.' Since joining the Navy, Parks has met her soulmate and is a newlywed. Her husband is a Marine, and they are considered a Mil-to-Mil marriage. 'So we are up for orders together at the same time, which is really, really helpful because we're not stationed together. So, one thing you have to do is something called a colocation, where you're like asking the military, can you please put us together so that we can, I don't know, be happily married.' Park's Navy pride is only heightened by playful banter with her husband. 'Being in different branches is kind of, I mean, the Navy's better, but he's got that 'OORAH' mentality, which makes it fun too, so yeah, I love that he's a Marine.' A March shopping event to support 14 local businesses
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – If you're looking for something to do in between Summit League games or just on our nicer March weekends, multiple local businesses have come together for a shopping event. Seasoned Style on the corner of 10th Street and Walts Avenue in Sioux Falls is just one of 14 stores customers can check out this month for a March Madness Shop Hop. DTSF offering free rides to Summit League Tournament 'As a retailer, I have noticed that not only have sales been down recently but also just traffic in general has been down,' Christi Petersen, owner of Seasoned Style, said. 'So, I was trying to think of some ways to build up some excitement and maybe get some foot traffic. So, I thought of the Shop Hop adventure so that everybody has an experience to do while they're out shopping.'Participating in the Shop Hop is simple — all you have to do is visit the 14 stores, get the card stamped at each and then bring it back for a chance to win a grand prize. 'You don't have to have a purchase to get the stamp,' Petersen said. 'We just really want you to visit all the locations. They're all around Sioux Falls, some in Hartford, some in Harrisburg.'At Seasoned Style you can find vintage home decor and furniture, but there is a wide range of offerings between all of the participating Shop Hop stores. 'There's some clothing boutiques, some gift boutiques, home decor stores, bakeries. We have a wellness, like a juice bar, so all different types of businesses for you to explore,' Petersen said. AMC Collective along Minnesota Avenue is also on the list.'AMC Collective is a marketplace for artists, makers and crafters to sell their items. So, it's kind of like a year-round craft show,' Carrie Thompson, owner of AMC Collective, said. Both Petersen and Thompson hope the Shop Hop allows customers to experience something new. 'Just find the new little hidden gems. See all the different things that maybe you didn't know were around and just check out different stores,' Thompson said. When you get a punch card all filled out, you can return it to any of the participating stores to be entered into the drawing for the grand prize, which Petersen says includes something from each of the 14 stores.
