Free bonsai exhibition showcases ancient art with modern twist

LONGVIEW, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) — Ancient skills with a modern twist will be on display for free at the Longview Arboretum and Nature Center. For 100s of years, people have studied bonsai. The word bonsai comes from combining the Japanese word for pot or container and word for cultivate. The most simple translation is that bonsai is the art of cultivating dwarf trees. Bonsai is not a specific type of tree; many pines and junipers are typically used. It is any tree that is grown in a pot and artificially prevented from reaching its normal size. Bonsai is also not originally Japanese. Dancing and dirt at Shreveport Green's Volunteer Day Bonsai originated in China by the fourth century and spread to Korea. Through Korea, it spread to Japan by the sixth century and spread further, becoming popular in places around the world. The Gregg County Master Gardeners and the Longview Bonsai Society are holding a bonsai exhibition from June 20 to July 3. On June 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., a special seminar, 'Master the Possibilities: Intro to Bonsai,' will teach the basics of bonsai care and design and provide the opportunity to ask questions about the practice. Nonprofit works to save ShreveCorps amid funding cut

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — Following the recent $400 million cut to AmeriCorps programs nationwide, which directly impacts 32,000 seniors living stipend and healthcare benefits. One of the programs includes ShreveCorps, which works to transform neglected lots across Shreveport into vibrant, healthy spaces. Nonprofit Shreveport Green says that without funding, those areas are at risk of 'falling back into neglect.' Give For Good is one of the most important days of the year for non-profits. Shreveport Green's Executive Director says it is a chance to share what they do and how others can get involved through donating or volunteering. DOGE slashes Shreveport Green and AmeriCorps funding She says it is also a chance to provide flexible dollars to help critical programs amid funding cuts. Lauren Jones says if you want to make the community a cleaner, greener, and healthier place to live, donate because financial support matters. 'This funding directly helps us get through that cut and gives us a chance to continue our work and better serve the community without any hiccups,' says Jones, 'So, beyond that, it gives us a chance to plant more food or plant more trees.' Jones says every dollar helps tackle blight and protect the environment daily. Shreveport Green's goal is to raise $100,000. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Cross Lake Clean-Up Day: Kayak, protect water supply

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — Did you know that Cross Lake is the primary source of Shreveport's drinking water supply? Yes, the lake is also used for swimming, kayaking, and relaxing. Shreveport Green is inviting the community to their Cross Lake Clean-up, where you can enjoy a complimentary lunch, help with the clean-up, and protect the drinking water this Saturday, April 26. 'The reason why we are focusing on Cross Lake is- I don't know if everybody realizes it, but the litter that's on the side of the road often gets swept up with these big storms that we have, and then it goes directly into our drinking water. So what we're doing is a bigger effort with a bunch of different entities to get in the water and clean it up where it drains out into the bayou,' says Shreveport Green's Executive Director, Lauren 'LJ' Jones. She says that people unfortunately dispose of tires in the lake, which absorb toxins and debris from the roadways, ultimately affecting Cross Lake and the drinking water supply. Shreveport's Highland Center becomes a beacon for disaster aid 'Things like tires, for instance, you know, there are a lot of tires that go into the lake. And when you have a used tire that's been on the road, it often does pick up toxic elements like lead or arsenic, because that's just naturally existing in the asphalt that's on our roadways. So when you put that into our drinking water, it's really hard to get that out of there,' says Jones. The nonprofit will deploy four cleanup teams, three ground crews, and one water crew, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and continuing until 1:30 p.m. at the American Legion, 5315 S Lakeshore Drive, Shreveport. After the cleanup, volunteers are invited to enjoy lunch and drinks at the after-party, located at 5315 S Lakeshore Drive, Shreveport, LA 71109. City of Shreveport takes steps to improve water quality issues identified by LDH 8:00 – 8:30 AM: Team assembly, safety briefing, gear handout, and zone assignments 8:30 – 9:00 AM: Movement to zones and clean-up begins 9:00 – 11:00 AM: Active clean-up 11:00 – 11:30 AM: Equipment check-in & lunch (provided by American Legion). Shreveport Green encourages individuals to register so they can have the appropriate number of Kayaks, life vests, and gear required. Waivers are required at check-in, along with complimentary coffee to help fuel the volunteers for their day. 'We just look forward to finding ways to connect people back to nature, whether that's through litter cleanups, growing food, planting natives, doing workshops or experiments, or any type of water treatment. That would be really cool. So come on out,' says Jones. Shreveport Green notes that if it rains, the event will be rescheduled for May 10, 2025.
