Clothing store manager loses thousands in Steeldale armed robbery

A store manager was robbed at gunpoint at PEP Clothing, Steeldale Shopping Centre on Friday, May 2. Moffat View SAPS station commander Lieutenant Colonel Shunny Govender said the robbery took place at around 17:00 when a black male, speaking Zulu, approached the manager at the store's main entrance. 'The suspect threatened her, saying, 'Do not panic or do anything funny. I want money, or you will die,' said Govender. Govender said the suspect then led the store manager to the till, where he took R17,146.80 in cash and placed it into a plastic bag. Afterwards, the suspect ordered the manager to remain where she was before walking away from the store. Govender confirmed that no shots were fired during the robbery and no one was injured. The manager did not recognise the suspect, and there have been no arrests made yet. 'The suspect remains at large, and a case of business robbery has been opened. We are continuing investigations to identify and apprehend the perpetrator,' said Govender. Two men were fatally shot in South Hills, adding to a string of violent incidents in the area in recent months. The shooting occurred at the corner of Northern Place and Geneva Street, at around 17:00 on Friday, May 2. According to Moffatview SAPS station commander Lieutenant Colonel Shunny Govender, police received a complaint about a shooting and responded immediately. 'On arrival, officers found a red Suzuki Swift with registration number LN08RHGP. One coloured male was seated in the driver's seat with multiple gunshot wounds. A second coloured male was found lying on the pavement, also with gunshot wounds. Both victims were declared dead at the scene,' said Govender. The deceased have been identified as Julian Theron, a coloured male in his 50s, and Jude Peterson, a 43-year-old coloured male. Police recovered 26 spent cartridges and one live round at the scene. No arrests have been made at this stage. Govender confirmed that the suspects are two unknown coloured males and the motive for the killing is still unknown. A case of double murder has been opened, and investigations are ongoing. Recent Shootings This incident follows a series of recent fatal shootings in South Hills, including a shooting at the Fever Tree Complex on March 27, where Shanodene Beandre Williams (21) was killed at the scene and Vernon Arends (28), the owner of Perfection Barbers, succumbed to his injuries nearly a month later at Baragwanath Hospital. Another shooting occurred on March 30, when Moffat View SAPS were called to Quantock Street at the corner of Ochill Road.
