After being scolded by dad, sisters end lives

Lucknow: Two sisters, 17 and 15, allegedly died by suicide after being reprimanded by their father for using a mobile phone reportedly gifted by some boys from their school, in UP's Ambedkar Nagar on Saturday evening. Police said the father of the girls, who is a teacher at a private school, returned home around 6pm and noticed his daughters talking on a mobile phone. On being confronted, the sisters claimed that the phone had been forcibly given to them by boys of their own school, who threatened them with harm if they refused to accept it. The father scolded the girls and left for the nearby market. However, while he was away, his son found the girls hanging inside a locked room. Upon returning, the father broke open the door and found the girls unresponsive. Police arrived at the scene and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination ASP (East) Shyam Dev said, "Initial investigation suggests the girls took the extreme step after being reprimanded. We are probing all possible angles, including the circumstances under which the mobile phone was received, and whether any pressure or threat contributed to their deaths." Superintendent of police, Ambedkarnagar, Keshav Kumar, said that it surfaced that last year on Diwali, the teacher had caught his elder daughter talking to a boy on the phone and scolded her. "He asked his daughter not to talk to the boys but she did not obey him. He had also scolded his younger daughter for not informing him that her sister had a phone," the officer said. Police said that statements of the boys involved would also be recorded.
