Fans Unanimously Roast Phil Mickelson Amid PGA Championship

The 107th PGA Championship teed off May 15-18, 2025, at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. This par-71 layout stretches 7,626 yards and features a mix of long par-4s, demanding par-5s, and a signature 'Green Mile' finishing stretch on holes 16-18. Advertisement Early leaderboard action showcased a diverse cast of contenders rather than the usual major-winner suspects, including Jhonattan Vegas, Matthieu Pavon, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Si Woo Kim. However, on Friday, the focus turned to PGA legend Phil Mickelson, as fans seized upon a first-round photograph of Mickelson that some felt underscored his competitive decline. Tour Golf posted an image of Mickelson on X that quickly went viral with the caption, "When a YouTube golfer tries to compete in a major." Fans online took no time to roast the World Golf Hall of Famer. One user said, "God this joke is so layered, I love it," while another commenter said, "😂😂😂 Wouldn't it be funny if @PhilMickelson saw this? I bet he would get a kick out of it too. Right?" Advertisement One other user simply said, "Rough day I see..," to which another fan responded, "Oh Philly cheesesteak is on the struggle bus! Lol" Others quickly came to Mickelson's defense. One fan said, "Have some respect... 6 x major winner," followed up by another user with, "Shot in the 70's. Pretty good." Phil Mickelson during the Open Championship golf tournament. Jack Gruber-Imagn Images Mickelson turned professional in 1992 and boasts 57 career victories, including 45 on the PGA Tour and six major championships. His major titles include three Masters wins (2004, 2006, 2010), one Open Championship (2013), and two PGA Championships (2005, 2021). Notably, his win at the 2021 PGA Championship made him the oldest major winner ever, at 50 years, 11 months, and 7 days. PGA Championship Round 3 leaderboard, live updates: Scheffler's massive eagle vaults him back on top

It's moving day in North Carolina, and already we have some movement. Overnight leader Jhonattan Vegas has given up his two-shot lead. Vegas jumped up to a two-shot lead over the field at the midway point of the PGA Championship in a rare showing for the 40-year-old veteran, who has never led a major championship until this week. He even pulled off a ridiculous shot off a rake on Friday, too, to keep himself in the lead. Advertisement While largely unknown, there is a big group of golfers close behind him. Si Woo Kim, who hit the longest ace in recorded major championship history, Matthieu Pavon and Matt Fitzpatrick are at 6-under. Scottie Scheffler, the top-ranked golfer in the world, is within striking distance, too. He's at 5-under with Max Homa. Rory McIlroy, fresh off his Masters win, and Xander Schauffele barely made it into the weekend. They survived the cut on the number at 1-over, and have a lot of work to do to get back in it. As of now, this is still very much anybody's PGA Championship to win. A weather delay has pushed the start of Round 3 to 11:43 a.m. ET. Groupings will now be in threesomes, instead of twosomes, and play will begin with split tees — front nine and back nine. The top half of the field will tee off on the front nine, while the back half will tee off on the back nine. This is all being done in an effort to get as much play in today. Full tee times can be found here. Advertisement Stick with Yahoo Sports this week for all of the latest news from on the ground in North Carolina, and check out the leaderboard here. Third Round When: Saturday, May 17 Where: Quail Hollow Club | Charlotte, North Carolina TV: ESPN10 a.m. — 1 p.m. ET | ESPN, ESPN+1 p.m. — 7 p.m. ET | CBS, Paramount+ 1:38 ET: Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Chris Kirk1:44: Scottie Scheffler, Max Homa, Si Woo Kim1:55: Jhonattan Vegas, Matthieu Pavon, Matt Fitzpatrick DeChambeau had a four-footer for par at 16 but it lippes out for his first bogey of the day. Now back in a four-way tie for the lead at 7-under with Scheffler, Vegas and Riley. How do you follow a bogey? How about a birdie for Scottie Scheffler, who's back to 7-under. It's a heavyweight battle at the top now. The heater continues for Bryson DeChambeau, who started the day five shots back, and is now the leader all by his lonesome. A birdie at 15 — his fifth on the day got him to 8-under ... and the crowd roaring. The moment is getting louder - and so is and down from the bunker on 15 for birdie and the solo lead on Moving Day. 💪🔥#PGAChamp — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 17, 2025 A drive into the trees at 11 doomed Scheffler, who couldn't get up-and-down after punching up toward the green. It's a bogey, back to 6-under. We now have three players at 7-under, after Davis Riley got there with a birdie at 15. Who's Davis Riley? Well, he does have two wins on Tour, including a year ago at the Charles Schwab. But as far as major experience, he doesn't have much. He's only appeared in seven, though he does have a T13 at the PGA Championship in 2022. Is anyone better around the green than Bryson DeChambeau? Bryson grinds, delivers, and joins the leaders at -7. 💥 #PGAChamp — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 17, 2025 Here's where we're at: - Scottie Scheffler has joined the leaders, though he's missed a few short birdie putts to create some distance. - Jon Rahm is 5-under on his round, and has joined the 7-under club. - Johnny Vegas, after a rough start, has settle down and maintains at 7-under. - Bryson DeChambeau has joined them with a birdie at No. 14. - In all, 27 players are within 4 shots of the lead. - At +2, will likely not be a repeat for Xander Schauffele or a grand slam year for Rory McIlroy. Jon Rahm drives it far, which is what he did at No. 16 — 364 yards down the middle. A pitch up and a tap-in for birdie and now he's at 7-under, tied with Scottie Scheffler and Johnny Vegas for the lead. Rahm, by the way, is 5-under on his round. No one else is better than 3-under. Scottie Scheffler just barely missed a birdie putt at the ninth, so he'll head to the back nine with a share of the lead at 7-under. Si Woo Kim, though, missed his par putt at the 18th. So, it's just Scheffler and Jhonattan Vegas at the top now. And just like that, Scottie Scheffler has a share of the lead. He just birdied No. 7, which marked his third birdie in a four-hole stretch, to match Si Woo Kim at 7-under. Now tied for the lead at the PGA Championship: Scottie Scheffler. — Golf on CBS ⛳ (@GolfonCBS) May 17, 2025 We've got quite a bit of movement, so here's a look at where things stand at Quail Hollow. Leaderboard 1. Si Woo Kim (-7) | 6 T2. Jhonattan Vegas (-6) | 5Matthieu Pavon | 5Scottie Scheffler | 6Bryson DeChambeau | 9Ryi Hisatsune | 10 T7. Matt Fitzpatrick (-5) | 5J.T. Poston | 7Davis Riley | 10Alex Noren | 10 With back-to-back birdies at Nos. 7 and 8, Bryson DeChambeau has joined the 6-under club, one shot back of Si Woo Kim. It's Scottie time. The World No. 1 poured in another birdie, this one at No. 5, to get him to 6-under on the tournament, just one back of Si Woo Kim. We said earlier if Jon Rahm gets his putter going, he's going to be in the mix. Well, he has, knocking down his fourth birdie of the day on No. 10 to get to 5-under and within two shots of the lead. That would be Si Woo Kim, who had a hole-in-one yesterday. His birdie at No. 4 gets him to 7-under, in the lead all by himself. If he goes on to win, he'll have this shot from yesterday to thank for it: 🚨 ACE ALERT 🚨Si Woo Kim just made a hole-in-one from 252 yards on the 6th hole! 🙌#PGAChamp — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 16, 2025 After a bogey at the opening hole, Scheffler nearly aced the par 3 third hole. He settle for a birdie, that's got him to 5-under — where he started the day — but just one off the lead. Here comes Scottie. — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 17, 2025 Don't think any of the four leaders want to see him in their rearview mirror. It's been a rough start for Johnny Vegas, who found the trees on his drive at No. 2. That led to another bogey, dropping him back to 6-under, and now in a tie for the lead with Matt Fitzpatrick, Si Woo Kim and Matthieu Pavon. Saturday is always dubbed "Moving Day," but the way Quail Hollow is playing — firm greens, tricky breeze — the only big moves may be down the leaderboard. There are birdies and certainly eagles out there, particularly at the driveable No. 14, but so far it doesn't appear that a really low number is out there. With every player on the course, only one is as low as 3-under, Maverick McNealy, and that's thanks to an eagle at the aforementioned 14th. We'll see how it plays out as the day goes on, but the prediction here is the leaderboard will be extremely tight heading into the final round. An errant drive at the first got overnight leader Jhonattan Vegas in trouble right from the start. A decent punch out from the rough was followed by a poor chip up that left him a 24-footer for par. He missed it, bogey, lead down to one. Nico Echavarria and Harris English absolutely attacked the 12th green this afternoon. You can't play it any better than that. Nico Echavarria sees it… and says 'Watch this.'3 feet. Closer. 💥 #PGAChamp — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 17, 2025 DeChambeau had a four-footer for par at 16 but it lippes out for his first bogey of the day. Closer. 💥 #PGAChamp — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 17, 2025 This chip-in has moved Jon Rahm to 4-under for the week. He's not out of it yet, either. Rahm on the move 📈The Spaniard is two-under through 4.#PGAChamp — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 17, 2025

PGA Championship Round 3 leaderboard, live updates: Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau Jon Rahm on the move
