Homestead shooting suspect nabbed a month after grocery-store murder: deputies
A month after a seemingly random shooting left a 65-year-old man dead outside a Homestead grocery store, the alleged culprit was arrested on Thursday.
Sifting through surveillance video and witness interviews led a Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office investigator to Leon Lamont Hillman, 47. After obtaining an arrest warrant, Hillman was cuffed on Thursday near Biscayne Park on one count of first-degree murder.
On April 12, Sidney Report Myers, 65, was socializing with several people outside El Charrito Supermarket, 708 SW 6th Ave., when Hillman walked up to him and pulled out a gun, the warrant read.
As Hillman closed the distance, he aimed the revolver at Myers and began shooting. Myers fell to the ground, and Hillman kept firing. He ran away while Myers hopped onto his bicycle and tried to escape, but collapsed at a nearby intersection.
Myers was airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
As of Friday night, Hillman remained in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
