Jackrabbits shut down Northern Colorado, 11-2
BROOKINGS, S.D. (SDSU) — Caleb Duerr and Jake Goble combined to hold Northern Colorado scoreless over the final eight innings and Owen Siegert supplied the offense with a pair of home runs to lead South Dakota State to an 11-2 victory over Northern Colorado in Summit League baseball action Saturday afternoon at Erv Huether Field. In evening the three-game series at a game apiece, the Jackrabbits improved to 13-29 overall and 9-13 in league play. UNC dropped to 17-27 overall and 8-15 in The Summit League. Duerr struggled in the early going as the Bears took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After a leadoff walk to Carter Monda and bunt single by Brett Barber, Jake King plated both runs with a two-out single up the middle. A freshman from Melbourne, Iowa, Siegert put SDSU on the board with a home run to lead off the bottom of the second, then helped jump-start a six-run fourth inning. After Bryce Ronken singled to lead off the home half of the fourth, Siegert doubled off the fence in right field to move Ronken to third. After Jess Bellows was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Dagen Schramm and Nic Werk each drew two-out walks to force in the tying and go-ahead runs. More two-out magic followed as Carter Sintek and Nolan Grawe hit back-to-back two-run doubles to push the Jackrabbit lead to 7-2. Schramm added another run-scoring double in the fifth and Siegert capped the scoring with a three-run homer to right in the eighth. Meanwhile, Duerr limited Northern Colorado to only three base runners the remainder of his five-inning start. The freshman right-hander allowed only three hits while striking out three and walking four. Goble followed with four hitless and scoreless innings, striking out one while allowing only a walk and a hit batter en route to his first career save. SDSU finished with a 12-3 advantage in hits as Siegert, Sintek and Ronken each tallied three hits. The Bears did not record a hit after the first inning. UNC starter Trevor Landen struck out seven, but allowed the first six runs after surrendering four hits and walking two. Five other Bear hurlers were summoned to the mound on Saturday. Omaha bats heat up as Mavs win series finale over SDSU
BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) — Omaha pounded out 24 hits and scored in five consecutive innings en route to a 19-5 victory over South Dakota State in the finale of a three-game Summit League series Sunday afternoon at a windy Erv Huether Field. The Mavericks, who salvaged the last game of the series, improved to 12-20 overall and 6-9 in league play. SDSU fell to 7-23 overall and 4-9 in The Summit League. After being held scoreless in the top of the first inning, the Mavericks gained the lead with a three-run second, starting with a with a two-run single by Grant Sommers. The go-ahead run later scored on an error. The Mavericks added a run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Noah Greise, then began to further distance themselves with a five-run fourth that was highlighted by a three-run opposite-field home run by Blake Stenger. Drew Borner added a two-run homer in the fifth inning before the Mavericks hung seven runs on the board in the sixth inning on seven hits. Jackson Trout continued his hot hitting in the series with a two-run double, while Mason Gaines doubled in a run and Sommers tallied his third RBI of the game with a run-scoring single. All five of SDSU's runs scored on home runs. Luke Luskey opened the scoring with his league-leading 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field. Adam Benes added a two-run homer in the fourth inning and pinch-hitter Dayton Franke capped the scoring with a solo blast in the home half of the sixth. Henry Zipay and Tyler Palmer each collected four hits for Omaha, with Trout, Stenger and Borner each tallying three hits. Luskey was joined by Carter Sintek and Owen Siegert in posting two of the Jackrabbits' 10 hits in the contest. Omaha starter Maddox Meyer worked the first five innings, striking out five and walking none while giving up four runs on eight hits. Reece Arbogast took the loss for the Jackrabbits after allowing four runs over three innings. He struck out two and walked one. Five other SDSU pitchers saw action out of the bullpen. UP NEXTThe Jackrabbits are scheduled to play four games in the Twin Cities over four days, starting Wednesday with a 6 p.m. game at Minnesota. From there, SDSU begins the second half of Summit League play with a three-game series Thursday through Saturday at St. Thomas. Top of the order key as SDSU outscores SMSU
BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) — South Dakota State shook off a slow start by scoring in five consecutive innings to post a 12-10 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in nonconference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Erv Huether Field. With their second consecutive victory, the Jackrabbits improved to 4-16 overall. SMSU dropped to 12-7 on the season. SMSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead, taking advantage of a Jackrabbit error in the top of the first inning to score three times on a home run by Carter Lang, then adding a run in the second when Brock Woitalla singled and later came home on a wild pitch. The Jackrabbits got on the board with a three-run bottom of the third inning. Freshmen Keagen Jirschle tripled and Nicholas Werk walked in front of an RBI double by leadoff man Carter Sintek. Owen Siegert then stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run single to left field. The Mustangs countered with a two-run double by Jared Cortez in the top of the fourth, but SDSU gained a 9-6 lead by scoring the next six runs over a three-inning stretch. The top of the Jackrabbit order did most of the damage with Siegert singling in a run in the fourth and adding an RBI groundout as part of a four-run fifth frame. The fifth-inning outburst began with back-to-back walks to Dayton Franke and Mason Lang before Werk singled to right field and Sintek came through with a two-run single. Luke Luskey capped the rally with an RBI single that plated Sintek. A solo home run by Adam Benes, his first of the season, made it a 9-6 game. SMSU once again responded, tying the game at 9-all with a three-run seventh. Cortez hit his second RBI double of the game after a leadoff double by Levi Lambert and pinch-hitter Tyler Froland greeted Jackrabbit reliever Dylan Driessen with an RBI double of his own. The tying run scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Carter Lang. The Jackrabbits regained the lead in the home half of the seventh when Werk and Sintek drew back-to-back walks to start the frame and Siegert loaded the bases with a bunt single. Luskey then lined a single to left field that brought home both Werk and Sintek. Siegert scored what would be the final SDSU run of the game on a groundout by Bryce Ronken. An error allowed SMSU to score in the top of the eighth, but Driessen prevented any further damage as he racked up six strikeouts in his three innings of work to earn the victory. The Mustangs finished with a 12-11 advantage in hits as Cortez and Woitalla each went 3-for-5 on the day. Siegert was 3-for-5 with four RBIs to pace SDSU at the plate, with Sintek and Luskey each going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Eight different pitchers went to the mound for the Mustangs, combining for 10 walks and 10 strikeouts in the contest. UP NEXTThe Jackrabbits are scheduled to return to Summit League play with a three-game series Friday through Sunday at North Dakota State. First pitch for Friday's opener is slated for 3 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, North Dakota.
