US likely to resume Mexican cattle imports by year end, USDA chief veterinarian says
By Sybille de La Hamaide PARIS (Reuters) - The United States will likely resume Mexican cattle imports by year-end, after a halt due to the spread in Mexico of the New World screwworm pest that can devastate livestock, the U.S. agriculture department's chief veterinarian said on Wednesday. Screwworm can infest livestock, wildlife, and in rare cases, people. Maggots from screwworm flies burrow into the skin of animals, causing serious and often fatal damage. The USDA indefinitely suspended cattle imports from Mexico this month, citing the pest's northward movement. "We want to make sure that we're comfortable that the way that they're doing surveillance gives us a good picture of what our risk level is for the fly continuing to move north," USDA's chief veterinary officer, Rosemary Sifford, told Reuters on the sidelines of the World Organisation for Animal Health's annual assembly in Paris. "It's hard to say exactly when, but (imports will resume) for sure before the end of the year, unless something really dramatically changes," Sifford said. No new cases of screwworm have been found farther north than one detected two weeks ago about 700 miles from the U.S.-Mexican border, Sifford said. A USDA mission will travel to Mexico in the coming days, Mexico's agriculture ministry said on Tuesday. Sifford also gave the end of the year as a "very last" deadline for controlling the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly called bird flu, in dairy cows. The virus has led to the deaths of over 173 million chickens, turkeys and other birds in the United States since 2022 and infected more than 1,000 dairy herds since 2024, USDA data show. Seventy people in the U.S. have also tested positive, mostly farm workers, since 2024, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "The only new (dairy) cases that we are seeing at this point are in states where we already have herds affected and are very much associated with biosecurity problems," Sifford said. "I'm not sure if (a full halt) will happen by the summer, but we're definitely on a steady path." For poultry flocks, the summer should be "quiet" for infections, with the number of outbreaks falling in recent weeks, Sifford said. Wild birds can transmit the virus to poultry flocks, which are then culled to contain outbreaks. "We are not seeing introductions from wild birds, so we are expecting a quiet summer," Sifford said.

Tiger Woods awards Danny List with 2025 Charlie Sifford Memorial exemption into Genesis Invitational
Tiger Woods awards Danny List with 2025 Charlie Sifford Memorial exemption into Genesis Invitational Show Caption Hide Caption Rory McIlroy talks about the importance of venues on the PGA Tour. Rory McIlroy on PGA Tour venues: "I think really good venues are a big part of the storyline." The field is starting to take shape for next week's Genesis Invitational, the third signature event on the PGA Tour's 2025 schedule. Tournament host Tiger Woods announced Tuesday that Danny List was the recipient of the Charlie Sifford Memorial exemption. List will join the field at Torrey Pines to make his PGA Tour debut. Awarded annually since 2009, the Sifford exemption represents the advancement of diversity in the game of golf. "Danny has shown resiliency and determination on the course by earning his DP World Tour card after returning from an injury," Woods said in a release. "He's earned this opportunity, and I look forward to seeing Danny tee it up at Torrey." First introduced to golf at three years old, List learned to play in his hometown of Accra, Ghana, where he often competed as a junior in men's events. List's game got so good he needed better instruction, which helped him earn a scholarship to Wellington College in the U.K., where he attended school and competed from age 13 to 18. At 14, List was the European junior champion while also earning ISGA National High School champion honors in 2015 and 2016. List attended the University of Washington for one year (2016-17) before turning pro. He has a handful of starts on PGA Tour Canada, PGA Tour Latinoamerica and the Korn Ferry Tour. He plays under the Australian flag. List suffered a stress fracture in his lower back, leaving him unable to swing a golf club. He missed the 2023 golf season before returning. In July 2024, List set a tournament scoring record at 21 under while winning the 124th California State Open. In November 2024, List earned his 2025 DP World Tour Card, finishing as one of the top 21 players at Q-School. In 2021, the Danny List Foundation was formed to help junior golfers in Ghana realize their potential. List has hosted youth clinics for more than 40 children while also providing equipment, coaching and the introduction to competition. "It's an incredible privilege to be the recipient of the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption and be invited to compete at The Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines," List said in a release. "To have this recognition, especially in Mr. Sifford's legacy, means the world to me. I'd like to thank Tiger for entrusting me with the opportunity to represent Mr. Sifford's pioneering spirit and all that he's done for the game of golf." Since 2009, an exemption has been given to a deserving golfer representing a minority background to play in the annual PGA Tour event. In 2017, the exemption was renamed to honor the memory of Charlie Sifford, the first African-American player to compete on the PGA Tour and the winner of the 1969 Los Angeles Open at Rancho Park. Past recipients include Vincent Johnson (2009), Joshua Wooding (2010), Joseph Bramlett (2011 & 2020), Andy Walker (2012), Jeremiah Wooding (2013), Harold Varner III (2014), Carlos Sainz, Jr. (2015), J.J. Spaun (2016), Kevin M. Hall (2017), Cameron Champ (2018), Tim O'Neal (2019), Willie Mack III (2021), Aaron Beverly (2022), Marcus Byrd (2023) and Chase Johnson (2024).
