K'tan man pleads not guilty to stabbing brother with stingray barb
KOTA BARU: A man pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here on Wednesday (May 14) to a charge of stabbing his brother in the ribs with a stingray barb at a house in Bachok on May 1, Sinar Hairan reports. The 36-year-old accused entered his plea when the charge was read before Judge Zulkifli Abdullah. According to the charge, Mohd Izwan Sukarnor, an unemployed man, is accused of intentionally causing grievous harm by stabbing his brother, Mohd Fakhran, 40, with a stingray barb. The act was allegedly committed at a house in Kampung Pauh Jabit, Beris Kubur Besar, Bachok at 9:30am, the Malay language daily reported. He was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A of the Penal Code, which carries maximum imprisonment of up to 20 years, and a fine or whipping if found guilty. Under Section 326A of the Penal Code, the defendant could face imprisonment for a period twice that of the maximum term prescribed. The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Kamarul Hasyime Rosli, while the defendant was unrepresented. According to Sinar Harian, Tthe court denied bail for the defendant, and the case is scheduled for mention on June 16. It is understood that a verbal altercation occurred between the defendant and his brother, which led to the defendant's anger and subsequent stabbing of the victim's ribs with a stingray barb.

Baling Fire and Rescue station chief, Asst Fire Supt Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil told the Malay language daily that they received an emergency call regarding the incident at 4:16pm. According to initial information, the victim was believed to be swimming in the river with several friends before suddenly disappearing. "The victim, Muhammad Aqil Fitri Hishamudin, was believed to be swimming with several friends before he was reported to have gone under and disappeared," he said. He said that a team from the Baling Fire and Rescue Station rushed to the scene upon receiving the call. However, he noted that the search operation was suspended at 6:30pm Sunday and would resume on Monday (May 12). "The search will continue tomorrow with assistance from the Water Rescue Team from the Sungai Petani and Jitra Fire and Rescue stations, as well as the police and Fire and Rescue Department's K-9 Detection Dog Unit," he said.
