Ex-Munster and Ireland U20 wing to feature on new season of Love Island
FORMER MUNSTER WING Conor Phillips will be among the contestants on the 12th season of Love Island, which will air from next Monday, 9 June. A Munster Senior Cup winner with Young Munster in 2022, Phillips made his senior competitive debut for Munster that same year, starting on the right wing for their URC Round 3 victory at home to Zebre. He also started the away defeat to Connacht a week later but was released by Graham Rowntree at the end of the season. Impi Visser: Blitzboks mean business at Singapore Sevens after Hong Kong loss
Impi Visser Blitzboks co-captain Impi Visser competes against a Kenyan player during at last weekend's Hong Kong Sevens. Photo: World Rugby Image: Zach Franzen World Rugby As one of the leaders in the Springbok Sevens team, Impi Visser constantly wonders what went wrong and how they can fix things when the team do not deliver in the World Rugby SVNS Series. Last weekend's hot-and-cold performance in Hong Kong, where they ended ninth overall, brought more questions than answers for the Blitzboks, but they will look to rectify it at the Singapore Sevens on Saturday and Sunday. It's the final tournament of the regular season, where the league winners will be crowned. Although the South Africans are out of the running to win the title after the slip-up in Hong Kong, they can still have a say in who takes the overall crown. They've been handed a tough draw, with Great Britain and defending champions Argentina waiting on Saturday. But should they beat the South Americans and progress to the cup playoffs, they'll open the door for Fiji or Spain to snatch the title this year. Only the top teams from the four pools will go straight to the semi-finals on Sunday. There will be no quarter-finals, so every match matters this weekend. Impi Visser: 'We know we can be a tough opponent if we do things well ... and that is exactly what our focus will be this weekend' - more here: 🔭#Blitzboks #PoweredByUnity #HSBCSVNS — Springbok Sevens (@Blitzboks) April 2, 2025 'We are here, and we mean business,' Visser said on Wednesday ahead of the weekend's games. 'Especially after a disappointing weekend in Hong Kong... We fired hot and very cold, and we have a lot of work to do. 'It's time to get stuck in and down to business. As one of the leaders, you always wonder where we can get better – what went wrong, what we need to work on, and if we need to change things. 'Those things constantly run through your mind. 'But once we analysed our footage, we saw it is minor things we need to fix. Small mistakes. 'We didn't play towards our strengths and the systems we've put in place. It was a little disappointing, but we have a weekend to fix that.' Wait for the celebrations - a day to remember for Gino ❤️🇿🇦#Blitzboks #PoweredByUnity — Springbok Sevens (@Blitzboks) March 31, 2025 They'll face Great Britain in the first pool match on Saturday (7.26am), and according to Visser, it's important not to look too far ahead. Yes, the big match will be against the Argentinians (10.44am), and that will likely determine who will go through. But if the Blitzboks do not start well against Britain, they'll have a difficult task ahead. David Brits and Sebastiaan Jobb were brought in as replacements, and their versatility should add a different edge to the South Africans.

Aussie Singapore Sevens slip before world championships
Australia's rugby men suffered all weekend and their female counterparts were handed a lesson by their greatest rivals in Singapore as the disheartened sevens teams were left with much to do before next month's world championships. The men's outfit endured a wretched weekend at the world series league-ending Singapore Sevens, winning just one match of four. Meanwhile, the women, still the second-best team in the world, discovered the gulf between them and their New Zealand conquerors appears only to be getting wider. Despite Maddison Levi's record-breaking weekend, in which she powered past 200 tries faster than any player before her and produced some heroics in the final, the women were again trounced by their great trans-Tasman rivals 31-7 in the Singapore final. Where the stars will shine ✨The teams fighting it out for the World Championship in @LASevensRugby #HSBCSVNS | #HSBCSVNSLAX — HSBC SVNS (@SVNSSeries) April 6, 2025 The men, though, didn't even manage to qualify for the knock-out stages as they suffered three comprehensive defeats - 28-5 to Uruguay, 28-7 to Spain and, in their final match on Sunday, 26-7 to South Africa. Their one win of the weekend was a 28-5 win over France, but it was not enough to camouflage what a deflating weekend it had been for coach Liam Barry's side. "After playing well and achieving a third in Hong Kong (in the previous world series event the previous week) it was extremely disappointing not to be able to repeat similar," said Barry. "We were well below our high standards. We must learn very quickly as we have the season-ending tournament to play in Los Angeles in four weeks' time." That tournament is the world championships in Los Angeles on May 3 and 4 where the top eight teams from the world series league program, which concluded in Singapore, will feature. While Barry's side finished sixth in the men's league behind winners Argentina, the women were a close second behind perennial rivals New Zealand, although Tim Walsh's side were hammered by the Kiwis in both the Hong Kong and Singapore showdowns. "We were totally outplayed in the final," admitted Walsh. "We didn't do ourselves any favours with some cheap errors and failing to apply any real pressure. "What did you just do, Maddi Levi?!" 😱An incredible try-saving tackle by the @Aussie7s player! 🇦🇺#HSBCSVNS | #HSBCSVNSSGP — HSBC SVNS (@SVNSSeries) April 6, 2025 "In finals, it is a game of detail and execution and we didn't deliver." Still, Levi's performance, which featured a try and a remarkable try-saving steal in the final, helped show what's still possible, and Walsh sounded a positive note, saying: "The back-to-back legs have been a real positive and proven the strength of the program and its pathway. "We had (captain) Tia Hinds lead the team in an authentic and composed manner whilst maintaining the team's high standards, and we are all looking forward to the final in Los Angeles." The Los Angeles draw features Australia's women in a pool with France, the hosts and Olympic bronze medallists USA and Fiji, with the top two going through to the semis. The men have a fiendish draw against Singapore victors Fiji, Spain and New Zealand.

New Zealand women win Singapore Sevens and Fiji men overcome surprising Kenya
SINGAPORE (AP) — New Zealand women retained the Singapore Sevens rugby title by defeating Australia 31-7 and Fiji men triumphed at the National Stadium for the first time in three years on Sunday. Fiji overcame Kenya 21-12 in their final after being held scoreless in the first half. New Zealand was over after 69 seconds thanks to Michaela Brake and 12-0 up after Risi Pouri-Lane wriggled free and scored next. That should have been the halftime score but, after the hooter, New Zealand tried to play out of its 22, was turned over, and Maddison Levi scored to cut the gap to five. Just 35 seconds into the second half, Jazmin Felix-Hotham grubbered and scored, then offloaded for a try to Kelsey Teneti. Teneti would have had a second but for brilliant defense by Levi, who ripped the ball from Teneti over the try-line before she could touch down. Brake, the all-time leading try-scorer in the women's world series, bookended the final with her second try for New Zealand to improve its record against Australia to 20 wins in 29 finals. New Zealand has appeared in all six finals of this world series and won four, including the last three. It also dominated a year ago but Australia ended up as the series champion because the last leg in Los Angeles on May 3-4 is a winner-takes-all scenario. Fiji overcome yellow card and Kenya In the men's final, history was on Fiji's side. It was appearing in an 85th cup final (won 46), while Kenya was in its seventh (one win) and first in eight years. Fiji also came with a 14-game winning streak over Kenya since 2018. But Kenya was better out of the blocks. It couldn't take advantage when Fiji captain Sevu Mocenacagi was sin-binned for a high elbow but still scored first, after the halftime hooter. A dropped pass by Fiji around halfway was kicked ahead by Vincent Onyala and Nygel Amaitsa won the race to the ball in-goal. Kenya led 7-0 and upheld an impressive record of not conceding a point in the first half of all of its Singapore matches. But primary reliance on a swarming defense came to bite Kenya. Within two minutes of the second half, Joseva Talacolo broke two tackles and sent Vuiviwa Naduvalo to the try-line and Fiji was level. As penalties and errors mounted against Kenya, denying it possession, Naduvalo's second try made it 14-7 with three minutes to go. Fiji sealed victory after Talacolo set up another try for Rauto Vakadranu, while Kenya's William Mwanji had the last say. Naduvalo was named the player of the final, just as he was when Fiji last won Singapore in 2022. ___ AP rugby:
