James Hird's sad truth for AFL fans amid fury over tribunal's Paul Curtis call

James Hird believes the AFL Tribunal's controversial decision to uphold the three-game ban for North Melbourne's Paul Curtis proves the game is moving towards a zero tolerance policy when it comes to concussions and bans will be inevitable when such incidents occur. Curtis failed to overturn his suspension for rough conduct on Tuesday night after the tribunal ruled the tackle which concussed Port Adelaide's Josh Sinn was unreasonably dangerous. Sinn was concussed when his head hit the ground during the second quarter incident in the Power's nine-point win. AFL counsel Sally Flynn said the Curtis tackle was unreasonable because it pinned Sinn's arms and contributed to the concussion. "He (Sinn) really had no opportunity to be able to brace," Flynn told the hearing. She maintained the severe impact of the tackle also had to be weighed in to the penalty. "Sinn was visibly affected by his head hitting the ground ... the impact should be classified as severe," Flynn said. Curtis' counsel Justin Graham KC argued the 22-year-old Roo stopped and dropped his weight, with his knees to the side of Sinn during the tackle. "Joshua's knees then plug into the turf ... (it) causes them to lunge forward and Joshua's head makes forceful contact with the ground," Graham said. There was no slinging and there was no driving motion involved." "Where we're at at the moment is not the solution... it's driving us all mad."Jimmy Bartel fears for where the game is at right now after Paul Curtis' three-match ban.#9FootyFurnace | Watch on Nine & 9Now 🖥️ — Footy on Nine (@FootyonNine) April 27, 2025 Graham contested the grading of impact as severe, adding there was "no rough conduct because the tackle was not unreasonable in the circumstance". The tribunal panel Jeff Gleeson, Paul Williams and David Neitz deliberated for around 30 minutes before returning their verdict. "Curtis did not need to propel Sinn forward with such force," Gleeson said. "Curtis could have, but did not, make a significant attempt to roll to the side. Prudent players are today well aware that tackling a player from behind when both the tackler and the ball carrier have some momentum carries a risk of causing a concussion if care is not taken to avoid or minimise that risk. Curtis did not do nearly enough to address that risk." RELATED: Damning footage emerges as Essendon complain about rivals Buddy Franklin exposes troubling issue hurting Swans Jack Ginnivan hit with charge from AFL over ugly incident The incident and the three-game ban for Curtis has led to widespread criticism around the AFL world, with former Kangaroos great former Kangaroos chairman James Brayshaw calling it an 'embarrassing' decision from the tribunal. 'What else was (Curtis) meant to do,'' Brayshaw said on Triple M's Rush Hour. 'When you look at the vision of it, the outcome no one wants ever, but it's a contact sport and accidents are going to happen on a football field." Eddie McGuire also labelled the saga a "disaster" and argued that Curtis was punished for what was effectively a standard tackle. Speaking on Nine's Footy Classified, the former Collingwood president showed a clip of the incident that showed how little time Curtis had to satisfy the guidelines for a safe tackle. "That is less than one-third of a second from when Curtis tackled him, till they got to the ground where he was supposed to roll, pull himself back, not propel and let go of his arms." AFL great Rory Sloane added: "To think about all that during a tackle in a game is impossible. You won't get any arguments from a player saying that's ridiculous that it's three weeks." "That is less than one-third of a second!" 😳The vision that shows the game may be asking too much of players, as the panel reacts to Paul Curtis' 'ridiculous' three-match ban being upheld.#9FootyClassified | Watch on Nine & 9Now 🖥️ — Footy on Nine (@FootyonNine) April 29, 2025 And Hird claimed the sad truth stemming from the Curtis saga is that players will unlikely never escape suspension anymore, if their actions result in concussions for opposition players. "It's all about the concussions, it's all about the legal cases going forward and it will get to the point I think where if you concuss a player through your actions, you're out for three weeks no matter what," Hird said. "Except the spectacular high mark... I think they've basically moved to the point that if a player gets concussed because of your actions there's three weeks. If that's where they're going then just make it a point, 'that's where we're going'."

‘No more tackling': Teammates erupt as AFL Tribunal upholds Paul Curtis ban

Senior North Melbourne players have has slammed the AFL after the league's Tribunal upheld a three-match suspension to Paul Curtis. Curtis was put on report for a tackle on Port Adelaide's Josh Sinn in North Melbourne's loss to the Power on the weekend. The Kangaroos small forward wrapped his arms around Sinn, whose head fell into the Adelaide Oval turf, forcing Sinn to be substituted out of the game with concussion. The Match Review Officer gave Curtis a three-match ban was upheld at the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night despite the Kangaroos challenging the ban. Curtis's tackle was graded as rough conduct and careless with an impact of severe — the Tribunal defended all of those charges. It's safe to say Curtis' suspension hasn't gone down well at all with his teammates, with two senior players slamming the Tribunal on social media. Luke Parker, who played his 300th AFL game on the weekend, described his side's upcoming game against Essendon as a 'touch football game'. Parker wrote on Instagram: 'Please attend our touch football game this Thursday night vs Essendon #nomoretackling.' Kangaroos co-captain Jy Simpkin also shared his thoughts, saying the Roos had now been on the wrong end of two harsh Tribunal calls following Jackson Archer's three-game suspension earlier in the year. 'Arch and now PC … smh', Simpkin wrote. Curtis has been one of North Melbourne's best players so far this season, kicking 18 goals to be equal fifth on the Coleman Medal leaderboard. The 22-year-old will now miss matches against Essendon, Brisbane and Richmond. 'We are asking a modern day player to weight up a whole plethora of outcomes in the heat of what is a fiercely competitive and combative sport,' Garry Lyon said on AFL 360. 'Geez we're asking a lot. That chase down you're telling your players you must never have your feet leave the ground in a chase down tackle from behind. 'I do think the three-match suspension is inflammatory in all this. Had there been some judicious element to where it can be three down to one (week), that would take a bit of the heat out of this. 'This is going to rage. It will rage. It is incumbent on the players and the coaches, you're going to have to modify. 'You can still chase down tackle, but if you knock them out in the process you're taking your footy life into your own hands.' Why Tribunal upheld Curtis ban The Tribunal found it was rough conduct because Curtis wrapped both arms and propelled Sinn forward in the tackle. It also noted Curtis made no or insufficient attempt to release either arm or attempt to roll Sinn sideways to avoid or minimise the risk of his head hitting the ground with force. The Tribunal argued: 'A prudent player would have realised that in executing a tackle in this way carried with it a real likelihood of Sinn's head making forceful contact with the ground with the potential for a concussion.' North Melbourne argued this was not unreasonable or careless conduct and that therefore Curtis should be free to play. North Melbourne compared Curtis' tackle to Geelong skipper Patrick Dangerfield's tackle on Sam Walsh in 2024, where Walsh was left concussed from a similar tackle. Dangerfield was initially slapped with a one-match ban, but that was overturned at the tribunal. Carlton's Adam Cerra and Adelaide's Mitch Hinge will challenge their suspensions at the Tribunal on Wednesday.

North Melbourne's Luke Parker hits out at Paul Curtis' three-match AFL ban

North Melbourne veteran Luke Parker might find himself facing a 'please explain' from the AFL after he mocked the AFL Tribunal following Paul Curtis' failed appeal against a three match ban. In a blow to the battling Kangaroos, who are 17th with one win, the tribunal found Curtis' tackle that concussed Port Adelaide's Josh Sinn was unreasonably dangerous. Sinn was concussed when his head hit the ground in the second-term tackle in the Power's nine-point win last Saturday. Parker, who joined the Roos from the Swans this season, posted his disapproval on Instagram. 'Please attend our touch football game this Thursday night vs Essendon #nomoretackling,' he posted on an image of the club's post about the ban being upheld. Fans backed Parker's cheeky dig on X as the image was shared widely. Earlier, AFL counsel Sally Flynn said the Curtis tackle was unreasonable given it pinned Sinn's arms. 'He (Sinn) really had no opportunity to be able to brace,' Flynn told the hearing. She maintained the severe impact of the tackle also had to be weighed in to the penalty. 'Sinn was visibly affected by his head hitting the ground ... the impact should be classified as severe,' Flynn said. Curtis' counsel Justin Graham KC argued the 22-year-old Roo stopped and dropped his weight, with his knees to the side of Sinn during the tackle. 'Joshua's knees then plug into the turf ... (it) causes them to lunge forward and Joshua's head makes forceful contact with the ground,' Graham said. 'There was no slinging and there was no driving motion involved.' Graham contested the grading of impact as severe, the highest of the four levels, adding there was 'no rough conduct because the tackle was not unreasonable in the circumstance'. The tribunal panel Jeff Gleeson, Paul Williams and David Neitz deliberated for about 30 minutes before returning a verdict. 'Curtis did not need to propel Sinn forward with such force,' Gleeson said. 'Curtis could have, but did not, make a significant attempt to roll to the side. 'Prudent players are today well aware that tackling a player from behind when both the tackler and the ball carrier have some momentum carries a risk of causing a concussion if care is not taken to avoid or minimise that risk. 'Curtis did not do nearly enough to address that risk.' Curtis will miss matches against Essendon, Brisbane and Richmond.

One-two punch of kindness

POTTSVILLE — Homeless persons seeking refuge from winter's fury were served lunch Monday at Servants to All, a daytime shelter, courtesy of Fighter's Heaven. 'Muhammad Ali's training camp sent food for about 20 persons,' said Jeanette Triano Sinn, the shelter's executive director. 'It came at the right time; it's President's Day and everything else is closed.' The donation arrived as Servants to All was observing National Random Act of Kindness Day. Frieden's Lutheran Church, Hegins, donated canned soup collected at its recent Souper Bowl affair. The parishioners at Holy Cross Catholic Church in New Philadelphia donated non-perishable foods. And Susan Hahner brought in a bag filled with knitted scarves. 'This weather is awful,' said Hahner, a retired Pottsville hospice nurse. 'I'm sure they will be put to good use.' Several weeks ago, she donated winter coats to the shelter at Centre and East Norwegian streets. The spirit of kindness that underlies the donations, Sinn said, is in keeping with the shelter's mission of aiding poor and displaced persons and families. 'We're all about spreading kindness, that's our biggest interest,' said Sinn, who made an appeal for Random Day of Kindness on the agency's Facebook page. Demand for food, she said, increases dramatically on Mondays. Over the weekend, people who are unhoused have often exhausted their supply of food. Mick Stefanek, executive director of Fighter's Heaven, said he had donated food to Servants For All in the past. 'They do wonderful work,' he said, 'We like to support them as much as possible.' Fighter's Heaven's support of community groups, Stefanek said, is in keeping with Muhammad Ali's devotion to helping people in need. The late boxing legend visited orphanages, hospitals and soup kitchens around the world, and was the recipient of the United Cerebral Palsy Humanitarian Award in 2001.
