Sioux City Art Center holds ‘Free Family Art' Day

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Saturday's nice weather brought families downtown to the Sioux City Art Center for its second annual Free Family Art Day. Activities took place outside on the center's lawn and inside the art center and the learning center buildings. Families could participate in arts and crafts projects, scavenger hunts, face painting. There was also a photo booth and magic. Plus, pork sandwiches were served and everything was free. 'The art activities are work for kids to work along with their parents. We have some activities where parents and teens can work together. We want people to bond together through art. But, we also, long term, want people to make sure that they remember, we're here for them. The art center is open six days a week. Free, always something going on. The learning center always has art activities going on for kids and adults. It's also an open house for the community to come back and remember what makes us so special,' said Todd Behrens, Director of the Sioux City Art Center. The event went from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and the Sioux City Art Center was hoping to top last year's attendance of 1,200 people. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The project transformed the architecture of the center by installing vibrant textiles made from dozens of recycled, donated, or locally sourced fabrics. SUX Fly & Drive fly in, car show, and pancake breakfast happening Saturday Browder, who lives in Brooklyn, worked with volunteers and artists at sewing events hosted in Sioux City. Razzle Dazzle represents in part the diversity of those who worked on the installation, according to a release. The Governor's Arts Awards are given every other year to recognize outstanding organizations that have made significant contributions to the arts in Iowa. 'These awardees exemplify the passion, creativity and leadership that drive Iowa's arts community forward,' Iowa Arts Council director David Schmitz said. Sioux City Art Center honoring artist and Sioux City native Craig Albright

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A new exhibit at the Sioux City Art Center will display the works of an artist who was born and raised locally. The museum announced Friday that the upcoming 'Chasing Light' exhibit will display a collection of paintings by Craig Albright. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 1 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will be free and open to the public. Albright was born in Sioux City and went to high school at Sioux City North. He currently lives in Iowa City. Book Lovers' Book Sale kicks off at the Southern Hills Mall According to a release, his paintings are inspired by the 'pastoral and industrial landscapes' of Iowa. Perfect realism, however, is not his goal. 'My interest is not to capture a faithful copy of what I see or to duplicate a photograph.' Albright says. 'I'm taking cues from various sources. Through the activity of painting, I use a process of abstracting, distilling, refining and even obliterating the image before me to bring the painting to its own life.' The May 1 reception will feature food and drink, as well as an artist talk in the Lecture Hall at 6 p.m. The exhibit will be on display until Sept. 14, 2025. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
