Controlled burn at Prairie Park meant to help with invasive species

SIOUX CITY, IA (KCAU) — The Sioux City Parks and Recreation held a prescribed burn Friday at Prairie Park as part of there casual maintenance. The burn is a yearly process to help have a better regrowth of the natural prairie grass that is grown there. This procedure also helps get rid of any invasive species in such as the dogwood trees. Parks and Recreation Superintendent Kelly Bach told KCAU 9 that when scheduling a prescribed burn, it all boils down to the weather conditions. 'When you do prescribed burns, you know in a larger scale like this, we put together a burn plan,' Bach said. 'We consider wind, where the smoke is going to be. Also with humidity, lower humidity things burn a little better so there's a lot of considerations' Story continues below Top Story: More than $40K raised from 11th Annual Pete Goede ALS Benefit Concert Crime: Dumped dog gets rescued, now happily wagging his tail Sports: Bishop Heelan boys and girls track win MRAC Team titles Bach said they were hoping Thursday would work for the prescribed burn but that wind and humidity were working against them. Construction resumes on Big Sioux Pedestrian Bridge

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — There's some exciting news for Siouxlanders: the Big Sioux Pedestrian Bridge that will connect Iowa to South Dakota has officially resumed construction. The project was delayed due to the June flooding of the Big Sioux River, as well as some permitting issues. With construction underway, the pedestrian bridge in Sioux City is planned to be just north of Interstate 29 and will connect approximately 50 miles of recreational trails once complete. 18th Street in Sioux City to temporarily close Matt Salvatore with Sioux City Parks and Recreation told KCAU 9 that he was upset by the project's delay, but is excited that it's back on track. 'Yeah, it was disappointing last year due to flooding, due to some permitting issues, that we had to shut that project down last year' Salvatore said. 'But it's awesome to see the progress right now with the old bridge going away and the crews on site, currently cranes on site, and we're seeing lots of progress. That's going to be a huge addition to connect the trail networks of Sioux City and Dakota Dunes, South Dakota.' Completion of the Big Sioux Pedestrian Bridge is currently set for Sept. 10.
