Diocese of San Angelo welcomes new pope

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The Diocese of San Angelo has issued a statement following the election of Cardinal Robert Prevost, now known as Pope Leo XIV, as the 267th pope of the Catholic Church. Leo was elected to lead the Catholic Church on May 8 following the conclusion of the 2025 conclave. A 69-year-old Chicago native, Leo is the first American-born pope in the history of the Catholic Church and the successor of Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88 on April 21. Who is Robert Prevost, the American-born Pope Leo XIV? Michael Sis, the sixth bishop of the Diocese of San Angelo, released a statement regarding Leo's ascent to the papacy hours after the new pontiff stepped out onto the loggia of St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican following the conclusion of the 2025 conclave. 'It is with great joy that we received the news that the cardinals have elected Cardinal Robert Prevost as the 267th pope of the Catholic Church,' Sis said. Sis stated that, although he has never personally met Leo before, he looks forward 'to his ministry as the universal shepherd of 1.4 billion Catholics around the world.' 'As he takes up this new cross, I trust that the Holy Spirit will give him all the spiritual gifts he needs to carry out his duties faithfully,' Sis said. 'I am convinced that carrying out the awesome responsibility of his ministry will be made possible only by the grace of God.' Sis called for prayer as Leo began his ministry as the pope. 'As he begins this new adventure, let us all remember him in our prayers,' Sis said. 'May his style of leadership always bear the imprint of our Lord Jesus.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Hundreds gather for a mass for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis in San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Hundreds of people from across West Texas gathered for mass at San Angelo's Sacred Heart Cathedral for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis on April 23. Bishop Michael Sis said all were invited to celebrate the Pope's life and pray for him. 'This was an opportunity for us as Catholics in West Texas to gather together all of our different churches and pray for him,' Sis said. Along with much of the Catholic community, Bishop Sis said he was saddened to hear of the Pope's passing but is comforted by a hope and trust in eternal life. 'For us, death is not a disaster. For us, death is simply the gateway to the next life,' Sis said. During the celebration, Bishop Sis shared that the Pope's passing marks a new chapter for the Catholic church. He said he trusts that the new pope will be a source of unity. 'We trust that he will be a source of unity among Catholics and a source of connection between us today and the whole tradition dating back to Jesus Christ,' Sis said. Bishop Sis will attend the funeral mass for Pope Francis on April 26. The day also marks the start of Novena, a tradition of nine days of prayer following the death of a pope. 'It's an ancient tradition that we pray for nine days after the death of a pope, praying that God will be merciful on his soul,' Sis said. The text for the Novena will be available on the San Angelo Diocese website in English and Spanish. A second mass for Pope Francis will be held at San Angelo's Sacred Heart Cathedral on April 24 at 6 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Local faith leaders on Pope Francis

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – Pope Francis passed away on Monday, April 21, at the age of 88. Locals here are reacting to the sad news and the Bishop of San Angelo Michael Sis, is giving us some insight on the path forward. 'When a Pope dies, we have to have his funeral within four to six days,' Bishop Sis said. 'Then 15 to 20 days after the funeral, the electing cardinals gather at the assisting chapel in the Vatican and they close themselves from any media and they go through a prayerful discernment which includes some voting until they can come into an agreement as should who should be the next Pope.' Pope Francis was the first in many things like the first Jesuit Pope, the first Latin American Pope, and the first to pick Francis as his name. 'Our Pope is just like the Jesus Christ of the present age,' Sister Elizabeth Villegas said. 'He is a lover of all people. He doesn't love only Catholics, but he is also the lover of the non-Catholics, Non denomination, anyone. He is like Jesus welcomes everyone.' Bishop Sis was able to meet with Pope Francis a few times before his passing. He said that in one of their meeting he got to ask him what gives him hope during his times of being in the ministry. His answer 'What gives me hope is the little people,' Bishop Sis said. 'Small, humble people that just live their life and do their job and just put food on the table and just provide for their families. Those are the people that give him hope.' Not only did the Pope have Hope he also had a strong message during his time as a Pope about poverty and helping others. 'The pope encouraging people around the world to look out for people who are in need and to welcome people who are feeling alienated or marginalized and to make room for everybody in our society and in our church,' Bishop Sis said. During this time of morning, people are stopping local churches to pay their respects. 'People are coming into the church thinking about him,' Father Frank Chavez said. 'Other people are buying candles. You know the beautiful thing about that is when they light the candles they are saying, I light this candle for you are now the light that is being attracted to a bigger light who is Jesus Christ.' Around the world there are a lot of Catholic Churches having masses for Pope Francis. Here at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, they will be having a mass on Friday to dedicate prayers to the soul of Pope Francis at noon. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
