His licence has since been revoked and he has been blacklisted.
A petition writer, also known as a legal document writer, is someone who drafts legal documents such as petitions for individuals or organisations. Dasna jail had five petition writers who were hired on a contractual basis. The writers draft a meeting slip for visitors so that they can meet their relatives in jail, and the charge for the slip is Rs 10.
According to jail superintendent Sitaram Sharma had received complaints that a petition writer was charging visitors excessive amounts for preparing meeting slips.
Following the claims, the superintendent decided to conduct an inspection.
Sharma and his team, dressed in plain clothes, carried out a surprise inspection at the visitor meeting area to investigate. During the inspection, they confirmed that petition writer Kuldeep was overcharging visitors. "When I questioned Kuldeep about it, he had no answer," he said.
According to sources, he was also reportedly found charging an additional fee of Rs 100-500 to expedite visitors' entry. Kuldeep was removed from the premises, his license was revoked and he was blacklisted from any future work at the jail.
