Married couple nabbed for suspected drug trafficking
ALOR STAR: Police arrested a married couple during a raid at a house here on Monday for suspected drug trafficking. Kota Setar police chief Assistant Commissioner Siti Nor Salawati Saad said the 3pm raid led to the seizure of 10,340 Eramin 5 pills, weighing approximately 2.85kg. She said police also found a plastic packet containing what is believed to be ketamine, weighing 483g, as well as 364.2g of ecstasy. "The couple, both in their 50s, were believed to be distributing drugs to smaller peddlers in the surrounding area. Ecstasy is often used at private parties or entertainment centres. "They are typically mixed with flavoured drinks such as blackcurrant, apple, or lychee juice. Once consumed, a urine test would return positive for methamphetamine," she told reporters at the district police headquarters. Siti Nor Salawati said the suspects' operation involved pre-arranged pick-up locations, where buyers would collect the drugs. The husband, she said, tested positive for methamphetamine and ketamine and has a criminal record for five prior drug offences, including under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for trafficking. However, his wife has no prior criminal record, she added. "The total value of drugs seized is estimated at RM189,642.43, police also seized RM530 in cash believed to be proceeds from drug sales," she said. Siti Nor Salawati said the amount could have potentially supplied up to 3,200 drug users in the district. "We are still investigating the source of the drugs, which we believe originated from outside Kedah. "We believe the male suspect has been active in drug distribution for about four years. He does not hold a steady job and his primary source of income appears to be from drug dealing," she said. The couple has been remanded for seven days from yesterday until May 5 to assist investigations.
