Hampton High School CTE students gaining skills in temporary locations

HAMPTON, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Association of General Contractors presented a $64,000 check to Hampton High School's CTE Skills USA department on Friday. After Hurricane Helene destroyed their entire school, Hampton High School plans to use the funds to restore its Career and Technical Education (CTE) building and purchase necessary supplies for its programs. Philip Arrington, the architecture and engineering design instructor at Hampton High School, stated that the location of the CTE building is still uncertain. $20M slated from state for Hampton High School rebuild 'As soon as we can figure out what our situation will be, where our future home will be, what our situation is, it'll be used to replace equipment to keep opportunities coming to these students and keep getting new opportunities for them to continually grow and education and their skilled trades,' Arrington said. Hampton High School students have been in the community helping Helene's victims since losing their school in September. 'We assembled a team of the entire chapter, and we went out to assist in clean-up, rebuilding, and demolition,' Arrington said. 'So we got to use a lot of hands on skills that we learned in the classroom, tools that we use in the classroom, and go out and start rebuilding these people's houses.' Arrington said the students even restored a substitute teacher's home. The school has six students who will attend the Technology Students of America (TSA) State Competition on April 2-5 and the Skills USA Competition on April 13-16. Students have been preparing for the competitions in a temporary location. 'I know that our temporary home and we're very gracious to have a space to keep the kids together,' Arrington said. 'But space is really limited, and that's been a hurdle for us, trying to build these projects with no space. So that's been something we've been struggling with.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Two M-E 8th graders create award winning app

ENDWELL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Two Maine-Endwell Middle School students are headed to Washington DC after creating an award-winning app. 8th graders Andrew Appleman and Priya Riegle were the winners of the latest Congressional App Challenge which was sponsored by former Congressman Marc Molinaro. Their app, EnviroScope, is meant to give people a way to connect with others about environmental concerns and to communicate with their Congressional representative directly. Riegle says an app can help people address environmental concerns near their homes. 'We were brainstorming ideas, me and Andrew, and we thought of the environment. We were talking about Onondaga Lake that it was pretty dirty. We thought we should make an app about how we could help other areas nearby and spread awareness about it,' said Riegle. The app has five features: get involved, get inspired, get informed, get in contact and get rewards. Appleman says a great way to engage a younger audience. 'Streaks and daily goals. You can feel good about yourself when you complete the goals and see yourself up on the leaderboard,' said Appleman. The students envision users creating messages on the app to organize cleanups or advertise other environmental efforts. Appleman and Riegle will travel to Washington DC to present their app this Spring along with winners from across the country. SUNY Broome students prepare lunch for Rotary

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Members of the Binghamton Noon Rotary had a particularly tasty presentation at their weekly meeting on Tuesday. Club members were treated to lunch from students from SUNY Broome's Culinary Arts program. All of the students from the Catering and Community Service classes participated in preparing a meal that included champagne chicken, a salad bar, mashed potatoes, asparagus and two types of parfaits for dessert. Chair of the Hospitality Programs Department Maria Montemagno says it's an excellent opportunity for the students to show off what they've learned. 'It's nice to see them actually putting what they're learning into action. And seeing them with smiles on their faces just shows that they're actually enjoying it. It shows us that they are in the right profession, going to school for two years and actually enjoying what they've learned, is a really great feeling. It makes me feel good that they know that they've picked the right path,' said Montemagno. Montemagno says most of the program's graduates go on to work in restaurants in our area. Each week, Binghamton Rotary has its lunch at the Culinary and Events Center on Exchange Street which is available to rent for parties, receptions and other functions. 'I never thought that I would be in a situation where I would be in a kitchen, using knives and being able to make fantastic tasting dishes. I just love putting smiles on peoples' faces,' said Skojec. Jayce Barton of Windsor was a first-place winner in electrical construction wiring. Two of the regional champs were state champions last year and are looking to return to nationals next year. Shayla Limbert of Maine-Endwell took first place in TV Video Production with Brenden Horn of Vestal. They had to make a promotional video for SkillsUSA. 'I always have doubt in my work. I'm like, it's not as good as it could be. But every time I get there, I'm like, whoa! It's just a lot of excitement, a lot of like, oh my gosh, I actually just did that?' said Limbert.
