Oklahoma head baseball coach gives UNC the ultimate compliment in postgame presser
Oklahoma head baseball coach gives UNC the ultimate compliment in postgame presser When another head coach calls you a team capable of winning a championship, you listen. With its 14-4 victory over Oklahoma in Monday's winner-take-all matchup to close out the Chapel Hill Regional, the UNC (45-13) baseball team solidified one thing: it's one of the country's best. Not only did the Diamond Heels dominate Monday, but they did so against a Sooners squad from arguably the best conference across college baseball. North Carolina lost 9-5 against Oklahoma a day earlier, but responded with its best offensive outburst of the 2025 postseason. UNC also won 11-5 against the Sooners on Saturday evening. Beating a team twice in three days is extremely tough to do in any sport, particularly during the baseball postseason, in which only the best teams and players remain. The Diamond Heels' latest obliteration of Oklahoma prompted the Sooners' head coach, Skip Johnson, to deliver the ultimate compliment. "You guys have a team here that can win the national championship, I can tell you that," Johnson said during his postgame press conference. "They're good. They're really good. They can run, they can do a lot of things. You guys should be proud of that." This message sound familiar? LSU's College World Series-winning head coach, Jay Johnson (no relation), also called North Carolina a National Championship-caliber team after the 2024 Chapel Hill Regional. If you recall that exciting ending, UNC downed the 2023 CWS champion Tigers, 4-3, in the 10th inning. You thought Oklahoma was a difficult opponent? Next up for the Diamond Heels is a Super Regional date with the Arizona Wildcats, who are 4-time College World Series winners. Arizona is winners of its last eight games. North Carolina has Jake Knapp, Gavin Gallaher and a team full of talented guys ready to counter – and hungry for a CWS title of their own. No. 5 North Carolina advances to Super Regionals with win over Oklahoma
No. 5 North Carolina advances to Super Regionals with win over Oklahoma Baseball season at Oklahoma is over. The Sooners saw their season come to an end Monday evening in a winner-take-all game against national No. 5 seed North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament, 14-4. OU had beaten the Tar Heels on Sunday to force one of the favorites for the national championship to Monday's brink. But UNC showed why it earned that fifth seed when it had to. North Carolina scored those 14 runs by pounding out 17 hits and drawing six walks against a depleted Oklahoma pitching staff. Coach Skip Johnson used seven pitchers Monday as he couldn't to go any of his usual weekend starters nor closer Dylan Crooks as the weekend's previous four games had left them exhausted. Reid Hensley, OU's starter, gave up the first five runs of the game, three of which came in the first inning. All three were unearned as a throwing on error on Kyle Branch extended North Carolina's initial time at the plate. Cleanup hitter Gavin Gallher reached and Luke Stevenson, who walked in the plate appearance before, advanced to second. The next two Tar Heels batters hit a double and a single to bring them home. OU responded with two runs in the second inning, but North Carolina tacked on four in the third and another in the fifth to take a commanding lead into the late innings. Easton Carmichael was the only Oklahoma player to collect two hits. His ninth-inning single provided an RBI and Jason Walk's seventh-inning home run scored OU's third run. Every OU pitcher but one allowed at least one run. North Carolina advanced to the Super Regionals for the second straight year and third time in the last four seasons. The Sooners finished the season with a record of 38-22 overall, having made the NCAA Tournament for a fourth year in a row.

SEC Baseball Tournament Schedule
SEC Baseball Tournament Schedule The Oklahoma baseball team heads into its first-ever Southeastern Baseball Tournament, likely ready to discover what the league's old-timers have long known. It doesn't really matter. The SEC, long the best conference in college baseball, is nearing 25 years of dominance now. This year, the SEC is expected to get 13, perhaps 14, teams into the NCAA Tournament. Regardless of what happens this week in Hoover, Alabama, Oklahoma is one of them. The Sooners finished 12th in the 16-team league. They'll play a recent foe, Kentucky, less than two weeks after meeting the Wildcats in the penultimate series of the regular season. Kentucky swept that series en route to firmly entrenching itself as an NCAA Tournament team, too. Another win against Oklahoma all but assures it. The Sooners need not worry. They're not even really a bubble team. The latest NCAA Tournament projections have OU no worse than a two-seed in whichever regional they land in. A loss to Kentucky, coupled with the down-the-stretch struggles during the regular season, could drop them to a regional three-seed, but that's the worst-case scenario for Oklahoma this week. Meanwhile, beating Kentucky, then Georgia - the waiting opponent for the winner of Sooners/Wildcats - then Vanderbilt, then whatever teams show up in the semifinals and final is moot for Oklahoma's seeding purposes. The Sooners aren't hosting a regional in Norman, and they're certainly not capturing a national seed. So, off they go to Hoover wanting to win, but not needing to. Don't surprised if coach Skip Johnson plays a bit looser this week, especially if OU beats Kentucky. At that point, the Sooners have no worries. Here's what the weekly schedule looks like.
