Jo Potter credits Rangers for bouncing back strongly after league agony

Jo Potter praised her Rangers side for getting over league disappointment to retain the Scottish Gas Women's Scottish Cup with a convincing 3-0 win over Glasgow City. The Light Blues lost the SWPL title race to Hibernian with a 1-0 defeat by Hibs on the final day of the season last week and they were also deprived of a European place by being leapfrogged by City. However, there was redemption in the Hampden Park final through an opener from Mia McAulay and a double from fellow attacker Kirsty Howat, with City defender Sam Van Diemen sent off in the 79th minute for denying a goalscoring opportunity. After winning the Sky Sports Cup earlier in the season, Rangers completed the cup double and Potter said: 'I thought we dominated the game. I thought we dominated possession. 'I thought we dominated as a performance and made it pretty easy for us on the sideline, for once. So it was deserved today. 'I'm really, really pleased for the girls that we could turn up after the disappointment of last week and get another trophy. It really means a lot.' Potter admits the optics of the season has changed by winning two trophies. She said: 'Yeah, and we needed the win. If we don't win that game, it looks very different to the position that we're sat in now. And that should be the same for everybody. When you don't win a trophy, it doesn't feel nice. 'We always feel the extra pressure being at Rangers. We take away two trophies a season, and everybody expects us to get three. 'We've been really close to that for two seasons now. 'Yes, it doesn't feel great, but we can't forget, winning trophies is what it's about, and we've a cup double again. 'I've won four trophies here in the last two seasons, which is a big, big achievement. 'Yes, it's not the one that we wanted as well on top of it, but we've got to celebrate these moments.' Glasgow City's defeat meant no trophies for a second successive season and boss Leanne Ross could not hide her frustration and disappointment. She said: 'It was tough. Unfortunately, we didn't show up today in terms of the way that we wanted to play, the way that we have played all season, I didn't see that from my team at all today. 'So that's probably the overriding factor for me in terms of we didn't deserve to win the game. 'We've only got ourselves to blame in terms of how we approached that game today. I was actually lost for words in terms of what we actually produced today. 'We never passed the ball. But again, that goes back to playing a team against Rangers that are able to go and press you high up the pitch, and I don't feel like we won any duels at all today, either. 'We were outfought all over the pitch, and that's the biggest disappointment for me, because as I said, I didn't see it coming in terms of the way that we've been playing recently.' NI star helps Rangers put League disappointment behind them with comfortable Scottish Cup success

Jo Potter's side lost the SWPL title race to Hibernian with a defeat by Hibs on the final day of the season last week but they showed their resilience at Hampden Park to retain the trophy. Mia McAulay opened the scoring after 25 minutes before fellow attacker Kirsty Howat doubled that lead 13 minutes later and then, after Rafferty had been introduced at the break, grabbed her second five minutes after the restart. City defender Sam van Diemen was sent off in the 79th minute for denying substitute Camille Lafaix a goalscoring opportunity by hauling her back but the game was gone by then, with the Sky Sports Cup winners assured of a Cup double. The woodwork saw plenty of action in the early stages of the game. McAulay struck the post in the 12th minute with a drive which beat City goalkeeper Lee Gibson and five minutes later Rangers defender Kathy Hill headed a free-kick on to the bar and over. Moments later, at the other end, City's Natalia Wrobel crashed a shot off the crossbar from the edge of the box. However, when 18-year-old McAulay got another opportunity outside the box on a swift counter, she drilled a shot into the far corner of the net. McAulay provided the assist for the second goal, floating a cross into Howat who turned neatly away from Van Diemen before firing low past Gibson, who moments later prevented a third when she blocked a shot from McAulay who had broken free of the City back line. It was a healthy interval cushion for Rangers, who lost captain Nicola Docherty to injury just after the first goal. City were again caught with a through-ball after 50 minutes which left Chelsea Cornet able to roll the ball across goal for Howat to tap into an empty net from close range. In the 70th minute City's Nicole Kozlova somehow missed the target with only Gers keeper Jenna Fife to beat while McAulay missed a chance for her second after being set up by Howat. Van Diemen's dismissal, after referee Dan McFarlane was called by VAR to check his pitchside monitor after initially flashing a yellow, completed a miserable day for City, while 35-year-old striker Jane Ross came on as a late substitute for Rangers in her last game of a stellar career.

Can Rangers repeat last season's domestic cup double?

Sunday, 26 May 2024. One week after losing the SWPL title on goal difference, Rangers rocked up to Hampden hoping to ease the pain by sealing a domestic cup double. This Sunday, 25 May, they'll be hoping to do the same thing. Advertisement Jo Potter's side lost out on the league - and Champions League football - with defeat to Hibs last weekend. A win at Ibrox would have kept them on-track for the treble, but instead they finished six off Grant Scott's side. Like last season, the Rangers manager says her side "cannot sulk" as they look to add to their Sky Sports Cup win. They were heavy favourites last term against a Hearts side making their first appearance in a major final. Their opponents this time around are not so inexperienced. Nine-time winners Glasgow City not only know a thing or two about trophy lifts, but come into the final in fine form and on a high from securing that second Champions League spot. City went without silverware last season, they'll be eager to get their hands on some this time around...
